Love the video. From the looks of it, 2012 Topps is one of the nicest flagship sets in the last few years.

Totally stoked on the new series 1 TOPPS! picked it up a day early thanks to Mr. Olds “ripping retail.” I’m digging the Classic Walkoffs inserts. But I am a little baffled how they compare Don Mattingly and Eric Hosmer in theirminserts titled Timeless Talents? Overall, enjoy the small oval name plate on front. But not too stoked on the errors on the stat board on the back. There is a double mentioning of 3B. Instead should be 2B, 3B. C ‘mon know quality control department at TOPPS!

Great break guys, 2012 Topps looks good so far!

I got my hands on my first retail packs (Rippin’ Retail son!) this afternoon and they look great! I could however,,,care less about a Rally Squirrel card. I’m all about the RC’s!!

Crisp, Clean….Gold no Diamonds….87 mini’s…whats not to like.

After watching this video and seeing the results of a 60-case break, I had to go out and buy a jumbo box of this. I usually don’t care about the Topps basic sets, but this year, it seems really cool.

I also really appreciate that you guys do these breaks. It’s great to see what the set is like.

Best looking regular set in awhile. Didn’t think I’d like the 87 Mini’s, but turning out to be a fun find. Are just the hobby packs, and not retail packs eligible for the mail in deal? Anyone know?

Chris and Brian great info and a lot of cards to go through.
I have my hopes on a GOlden redemption or a Golden Ticket.I do like the Blaster Patch cards nice touch .The Sp’s are getting a bit too much for me but I’d like to see the numbered gold cards but overall a good start to 2012. Hey is the squirrel in this years box any different than Polley walnuts odd from 07?
I like the info on the inserts is deatiled a good job there.
What would be cool is to put jerseys on the 87 insert or redemp’s for auto’s.
great job -Tom

Great video! I really liked 2011 Topps and I’m starting to like 2012 Topps, as well. The SP cards are very cool. It’s nice to see the players goofing around and having fun. I’d love to get my hands on a squirrel card and have Beckett Grading encase it for me. I’d probably mount it on my wall…haha! Thanks for the contest!

@Tom O Brien. Only hobby boxes and HTA jumbo boxes are available for wrapper redemption. I believe, from what I have seen is that TOPPS has madenthe wrappers a different shade of blue for the redeemable wrappers. Mind you Tommy boy, I’m not the professional though. Only my personal observations. I bought multiple blaster boxes. Worth, nada!

Please, please, please pick me to get the free box. My 2012 baseball card season needs something like this to get back on track. Because on the day the hobby products were released I was supposed to be selling a game system for $100 and getting myself a hobby box (keep in mind that I have never been able to afford a hobby box before, so I was really excited about it). I was going to get the money and then go to my closest hobby store and get my first box. But about ten miniutes before I was going to leave the lady told me she wasn’t going to buy it. I was devistated. I was looking forward to that forever. I need something to pick me up for 2012. Please let me have it.

Many of the images, whether “in action” or “in the moment,” are different than usual. I also like the 87 minis…seems to be more duplicates than normal though. For the record, you guys for sure have my dream job! I’m sure its not all glitter and glamour so my hat’s off to you as well. I truly look forward to Beckett.com at the end of my day. Down to the matter at hand. Although the design looks great this year I have to say I am with you guys on the 1987 Mini’s! I can’t believe that set can still be bought for so little. I realize it was over produced, but being an old-school kinda guy…who cares! It’s an awesome design before the days we had to be lured with autographs, short prints, and parallels! I’m going in if for no other reason those! Again, just an old school kinda guy!

Thank you for the video. Your videos are always very informative. I like the ’87 minis, but there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for them, other than 25 year anniversary (Yikes! that was the year I graduated from high school). Still, I don’t get them getting the mini treatment.

Thanks for the wrapper advice. Dug through my trash for about 5 minutes. The inserts in a pack of 2012 TOPPS are just as mysterious as the slime that came up with the wrappers. I’ll definitely be going for the mini set. Great vid as usual.

This years set is waaaay better for numberous reasons. I have to agree with the masses here that the 87 minis are the feelgood pick of the year. I mean come on, 1987 cards are so awesome. I really like this set my thoughts are that it is probably the cleanest base sets of topps I have ever seen over the last 10 years. I got a question though; Why are there 2 different cards of Dee Gordon? can some one help me with that??

I like the 2012 Topps so far but in my hobby box I noticed 3 of my 6 Gold Futures had some rough edges on the bottom of them. They seem to be the only cards affected, guessing something to do with the card stock being a little softer and thinner than the other inserts. Kinda sucks that a pack fresh card is already slightly dinged but other than that I’m happy with what I’ve pulled so far.

Keep up the box break videos!

2012 Topps seems to be what Topps has always been: a fun break geared towards the collector, not the person trying to flip the cards for monetary gain. And that is a good thing. If you pick me as a winner I’d like you to take the box to a local hospital and pass the packs out to some of the kids stuck in there. Or if a staff member at Beckett has a child in school where they still do “show and tell” then have them take it in and share the packs with their classmates. We need kids to put down their video game controllers and cellphones and re-discover the simple pleasure of ripping a pack of cards. Thanks guys.

I have watched alot of your box busters. I really like the info you guys give and the playful banter between Chris and Brian. That ripken ring would be a very nice hit. However its numbered so high. These days unless cards are numbered to 50 or 25 no one really cares. I like the base design and the sp’s are what will drive this release. That and the golden ticket somebody can pull. I have opened to 8 Hobby packs and two Jumbo packs and so far have gotten one redemption auto for Alexi Ogando, and also 2 prime 9 card #4 and #6.

Posted February 3, 2012 at 1:29 am | Permalink
Bryan

Both of those boxes killed the hobby box I busted today. Matt Laporta “Trade pays dividends” golden moments mem card stuck to the card in front of it. I don’t think any part of that qualifies as a golden moment. However, I too love the 87 minis set. Maybe if they make Archives a recurring set we could see ‘em again sooner than 2036?

Posted February 3, 2012 at 1:32 am | Permalink

Another great video, as usual. You guys always keep it interesting and give great reviews and a great breakdown of the product. I enjoy Chris’ humor and Brian’s seemingly begrudging acceptance of said humor.

I like the design of Topps 2012, and two of my three favorite players (Kemp, Kershaw) have autographs and/or relics in it, so I get to chase three great hits.

Unfortunately, I’m recently unemployed, so I’ll only be opening this stuff sparingly this year. I have to say that I think some of the designs are going to look better in person than they do in video or photos (I hope), because some of them just weren’t doing it for me. The insert sets, specifically, are kind of abstract-looking, especially the “Gold Standard” with that oddly placed gold foil coin thing. I do like the Golden Futures card design, along with the gold base set parallels. And you guys were right – those minis will be fun to get signed! As far as the base set design, I like 2011′s design better than 2012. The oval with the player’s name inside it detracts from the photo. Last year was much less intrusive in my opinion. Still, I know I’ll eventually find myself collecting the set, and I hope that I can (A) find a job to be able to buy a few packs, and (B) maybe win a box in your contest. Thanks for the video! Nice to see what all’s in this year’s stuff.

I enjoyed watching you guys open those packs. It was like having Christmas 10 months earlier. I decided to order a hobby box hoping for the thrill of pulling out a Rally Squirrel. By the way, I do not bust packs or boxes. I merely open them. If my mother found out I was a pack buster, it would break her heart.

This year’s set is awesome! The actual cards are a ton better than the mocks. I don’t like that you can’t get vintage cards in golden giveaway but hopefully it won’t have breakdowns like diamond giveaway did. I actually went to the Walmart in the next town over and checked if they’d have topps. I thought there was no chance but they were there! This year is shaping up to be better than expected and I’m excited about the Reds’ run to the WS! Awesome video, I think box busters is the best thing about Beckett.com.

Go Redlegs!

I’ve just starting watching these box break videos, and I’m highly impressed with all the info and facts from your videos. Also really enjoy the personal touches that Chris and Brian bring to the job of opening the packs. I believe the ring card is awesome(Ripken fan) and agree the mini’s would look great with an on-card auto.

Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos;

Video was good. I dont understand the fascination with the ’87 minis. I started collecting in 87 and have seen that wood border too many times to count. I have boxes of the stuff. Literally like moving boxes full of it. I think it is too soon for it but everything else looks nice. I really like the look of the classic walkoff inserts.

Do you think that the ’87 mini parallel set will peak interest in the original ’87 set? It’s disappointing to see how those classic sets from the mid-late 80s – early 90s have suffered value-wise!
P.S. – also glad to see that the subsets will be scaled back this year!

You guys need to do something with your camera. Picture’s dark and unclear.

I like the base design a lot more than last year. Don’t like manufactured relics counting as hits much less taking up an entire pack. Is there any relevance for the 1987 design minis in a 2012 product? The actual 1987 minis didn’t even use the regular 1987 design other than the wood border.

Posted February 3, 2012 at 8:58 pm | Permalink
Anthony D'Amalio

I was wondering why the minis would be 87 Topps design, until I opened a pack and saw one. Super sharp, they look great. Hopefully they never get down to 90 Topps minis, THAT I could do without. Breaks like these always make me wish even more that there was a decent hobby shop out here (in BF Virginia), but I can make a drive for this.
So far only ripped retail, bunch of blasters and loosies. Nothing incredibly crazy, but tons of Golden Giveaway cards, which I need Topps to allow me to plug in! Also, an Aaron (on Ebay!) and Ryan stitched name patch, Clemente (also Ebay!) and Rice Retired Number patches! Those are nice, looking for Yankees, though!

Thanks for the break guys! Lets me know what I may drive an hour plus to scoop up, retail gets a little boring sometimes!

Well what a year 2012 is going to be!!!

1. Rangers have Yu Darvish.
2. Nick Swisher is still a Yankee (which means he is sure to have cards).
3. My favorite player Don Mattingly is in the 2012 set.
4. My favorite older set design of all time (1987 Topps) is a mini insert set of all things in 2012 Topps.
5. And I just found out I am having my first child!!!

The best thing about this and all your videos is you take the time to explain the sets, explain the pricing and when you really like or dislike something you say in a polite but clear manner. I know everyone who makes a comment wants a box and I am no different. I cannot buy any hobby this year since I have to be responsible now that I am going to be a dad so nothing would be cooler to win this hobby box, put those cards away as the first ones I give my son or daughter to introduce them to card collecting. In my case you never know who might want that 1987 Ian Kinsler mini or Adam Dunn salute to one of his 11 home runs as their first card! Thanks and good luck to everyone!!!

I really like this years Topps. I especially like the design of the base set and the gold inserts. I don’t like the weight difference of the ring and coin cards. It makes it easy to search packs. I like the 1987 mini insert set, too, but woulda liked it more if they were normal sized rather than mini’s.
Also, I am glad to see a reduction in the amount of parallels, but wish they would have kept the serial numbering for the Gold’s.

Went out and purchased a couple blaster boxes of Topps 2012 for my bithday yesterday. Very nice product, but, I noticed a glaring error with a majority of the cards I pulled. Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but, a majority of the cards I pulled had “3B” in place of “2B” (for doubles) in the stats section on the back. Hence, there are two “3B” labeled columns and no “2B”. Fairly minor — just something interesting to note for collectors who are interested in printed error cards.

The product is quite dissapointing. The 2B , 3B error on all the vertical picture card backs is unexcusable. And Franklin Gutierez card back is wrong to. It appears Topps has farmed out production to China for all product and it shows. I was out of the Hobby for 10 years and got back in after I heard Topps had exclusive rights but I think MLB should grant more rights as that seems to keep a good competitive balance and better product. Until then I am gone again.

YAY! NO reprints (and parallels of them) and much less base parallels!
I might actually buy a box of these. The cards look real good (as did last years’), but the fact that there is less variation of base/inserts helps a lot. It’s about time Topps stopped with the overkill of inserts and parallels. I generally don’t like mini’s, but with the ’87 design they have a great throwback design/quality to them. That was one of my fav. sets when I was a kid.
I usually stay away from the main Topps set, but this looked like a fun break. I also like that there aren’t ANY prospects, only true RC’s. That was what kept me from buying MLB cards the past couple of years (too much focus on the prospects).

Looks like a fun break. Those minis bring back memories. I remember trading a legit card to a friend in my 3rd grade class for an ’87 Topps Kent Hrbek. What did he give me? A picture of the Hrbek card front cut from some kind of album, glued to a piece of cardboard. And I took it. Unbelievable! That’s the card I remember most from that set. Thanks for the video. Keep them coming.

I like the look of the cards this year, but not the names. I can’t keep all the names of the inserts straight, and they are just too generic sounding- golden “moments”, “standard”, “greats”. But I’m sure gonna have fun collecting this set!

the new topps looks great. i too love the 87 mini’s. the short prints must really be hard to get as ive watched both video’s that featured the new topps and only one short print card was pulled. that ripken ring card was an awesome pull. ive seen the ring cards online and was amazed at how sweet they looked. its great that you guys open packs/boxes on becket.com. it reminds me of when me and my friends would go out and spend our allowances on cards, then rush back home to see who had the better packs/pulls. ive already bought 2 retail boxes of the new topps and cant wait to get my hands on the hobby boxes. topps has always been my favorite brand since i was 6 years old. from the subsets to the short prints, this product really does have it all. thanks for allowing me to comment on this.

Like I said, Im not much of a baseball collector, but I loved watching the whole video since they kept it informative and fun. Of course, Chris always does a great job keeping us informed. Thanks for one of the best box breaks from beckett I’ve seen. Now lets get ready to do some basketball!!

I can’t say i will not buy a box or two of the new topps 2012, but i will not be buying as much as i thought i might. Every year for the last few years the topps base cards come out, the price sky rockets and then every single card value drops. Why is it that the first series of topps comes out they are the lest valued card that topps comes out with. The signatures are impossible to get without buying a ton of boxes and when you do get one they are no bodies. But i do like the amount of inserts, opening packs are always fun. never really know what you are going to get. Its the cheapest set of card that can be bought. Add a better quality card set to the series 2 and i can almost bet you that you would double the profit of the base series Topps cards without having to jack the price up. but what do i know i just buy your products. Thank you for your time and good luck everyone with series One 2012 topps.

So far I am loving the new 2012 Topps. My friend and I each bought a hobby box. I only pulled a ryan zimmerman relic, but my buddy got a Adam Lind auto and a John Danks printing plate.

I just bought a 70 card box of these at Target and found some cool cards like Brandon Belt, Brian Wilson, Derek Jeter, Mickey Mantle, Josh Hamilton and 87 mini Kinsler. I want to buy a hobby box and a jumbo pack box to find more!

Too bad Topps phoned things in this year. The inserts are uninspiring (other than the golden moments replacing last year’s platinum diamond anniversary silver color). 1987 topps minis are okay. the base cards have silver foil (you’d think it’d be gold to keep with the “gold” theme), the last name is hard to read on the front because of the foil on a black bar. I have seen some of the replica rings in person and they look like brass to me despite the fact Topps says they are supposed to be gold in the text on the back. How about spending a few cents to actually gold plate the rings, Topps?

On the plus side, great photography, the name/team/position on the front is minimal so you get to see more of the picture, and the name and card number are nice and clear on the back so it won’t make for fatigue while sorting.

My grade: C- for the 2012 base effort.

Topps baseball looks amazing. I look forward to it every year. There are so many entries…I could only afford one pack for now and that might be all I can afford with 4 kids. A box to win would be amazing and make my whole year. Especially a hobby box. Thanks for the contest Beckett and for the video break. Amazing stuff.

Nice box breaks! I really like the manufactured “relics”, although someone is going to have to come up with a way to store them! I also like the fact there are less parallels, keeps me from getting too confused. Thanks for the video guys! By the way, since there are no hobby shops near me here in southern Ohio, I think you should pick me to win the hobby box! All I have to purchase from is Walmart.

Gentlemen, thanks for the video of the box break of the 2012 Topps Series 1. I have busted a few boxes myself already. It appears Topps continues to do a good job delivering a quality product at a reasonable price (which is huge in today’s financial climate. I must say I like the Cal Ripken ring relic that was pulled. In my jumbo box I received a Reggie Jackson World Series pin from 1978, numbered to 736, as well. Futhermore, I agree that the parallel cards should be kept at a minimum. Lastly, the 1987 Topps inserts are fresh, and will indeed be a true collectors goal to obtain the set of 50. Keep collecting and PLAY BALL!

There’s nothing better than breaking a brand new box as spring training approaches and 2012 will be no different. The first card set that I collected as a kid was that 1987 Topps set. The BJ Surhoff Future Stars card is still one of my favorite cards of all time. I loved last years Kimball minis and to find out that the minis this year are 1987s is absolutely awesome. I also really like the Gold Futures inserts. Very clean, crisp design. Generally, I’m not a fan of manufactured relics but I recently saw a retired rings card that was pulled at my LCS and its very impressive looking.

You guys probably have one of the best jobs in the world. I’m jealous. Topps 2012 are nice with the 87 mini’s but I still like last years Lineage 75 mini’s better.

Canada represent!!

2012 Topps flagship is as flagship should be. None of the insert sets have me madly chasing them but the ’87 minis are, by far, exceeding expectations and will make great TTM cards.

Keep up the great work Busters!!

The product overall matches if not surpasses last year. Topps did such a great job with their retail program inserting more “hits” into their retail products. So getting retail seems better. but the hobby boxes is where its still at and owning a box of Topps Baseball 2012 would be awesome! The base card design for this years product is nice and clean cut with good photography, the inserts are a plenty and look nice, the autographs and memorabilia are nice as well. Most of this opinion came from teh box break video. The other opinions came from seeing cards on the bay. But overall, would love to win. Thanks for the contest and good luck to everyone!

I have collected Topps since 1971. Just can’t get enough. If I could I would open a Topps only shop. I get a kick out of the love of the Rangers and Swisher comments you both have. I do love my Nick Swisher Bowman Chrome X-Fractor 2002 RC #’d to 150. I also have followed the Rangers since Burroughs was there, Dad Burroughs not Son Burroughs.
Nice job guys.

The upside is that we still get full stats, and they even go back and add a lot of minor league stats now when they can. The downside is that they changed the abbreviations for some of the well known stats for no good reason. “W” & “SP” show up for batters instead of “BB” and “SLG.” The downside is that most of the cards have 3B listed twice for batters.

The golden moments are the main insert I believe. I love golden giveaway code cards get cool stuff you can get. Love watching box breaks from beckettnational30 to get to know all about the cards. And what you will find in all the hobby boxes the topps archives looks pretty cool too.
