The Hobby Hand Turkey Returns: Name five things you’re thankful for

By Andrew Tolentino | Editor

Thanksgiving is upon us. But before we all begin fighting over drumsticks and putting gravy on everything just before falling victim to the tryptophan, it’s important that we reflect for just a moment.

Making his glorious return, the Hobby Hand Turkey wants to ruffle our feathers for a change by asking us to name five things we’re thankful for. These could be pieces that you have in your personal collection, cards that you want but don’t have, or heck — they don’t even have to be cards.

If you have a moment, feel free to join us and other collectors in sharing five (mostly) hobby-related things you’re grateful for.

I am thankfull for press pass doing the legends release every year. It is my favorite of them all and the only time I can collect more than a couple of my pearsons during the year.

I am thankfull for press pass continuing to find new racing personalities to do autographs of. This year there have been over 10 new subjects released. Including in 2011 legends dick begrren james hylton chocolate myers and dale inman. Now if I could just find the two missing autographs from my collection as i have 364 out of 366.

I am thankfull that there are more than one tiny lund cut autograph cards. While I do not have one yet. I do plan on getting one someday. I was at the race in which he died and his autograph is a most wanted in my collection

I am thankfull that trevor bayne has brough some attention back to david pearson this year with his daytona 500 win. Now if i can be thankfull and get the dual signed diecast that would be great.

I am thank full for a group of racing NUTS that love to share the hobby with each other. While there are bumps in any road for the most part its always smooth sailing.

First and foremost, I’m thankful for my wonderful, intelligent and vibrant children Gabriel and Kaiden.

I’m thankful to God for the time he’s given me on this crazy planet and the trials and tribulations he’s put me through and continues to put me through.

I’m thankful for having 3,500 different Pistons cards that I’ve obtained most of (around 3,000 of them) through people I’ve met here on Beckett.

I’m thankful to have the ability to be a moderator on this wonderful site.

I’m thankful that cards provide me an occasional escape from the every day stresses I encounter. Yeah, it costs some money at times, but it’s a lot better than many other optional “escapes” from reality.

I am thankful for the fine NFL games that air during thanksgiving, especially the cowboys game. Its a huge part of the family get together to stuff our face with turkey and gravy while going crazy over the game. I am thankful for our troops who fight for freedom to be able to come home and share the holidays with everyone back home. I am thankful for a wonderful daughter who loves football at the age of 3 and is already a huge cowboys fan, and super thankful her grand folks are texans fans, cuz that just means we get to double rub it in! Lastly i am thankful to be able to be a part of this great hobby for so long and to be able to share it with my kiddo.

I’m thankful for no NBA games. Athletes and owners should be thankful fans support this garbage.

I’m thankful for creativity that Panini has brought. Now if they can only bring European Soccer Trading cards to the mix that would be nice. It’s tough going on Ebay looking to buy product that is only being sold in Asia and Europe.

I’m thankful for my family putting up with me and my collecting frenzy but buying and selling has bought a lot of nice things for the wife and kids.

Thank you Beckett for letting us be part of your lives.

1-I am thankful to God first and foremost for all of the blessings that he has afforded me (including my family).

2-I am thankful for my Uncle Ed who got me started collecting cards when I was 9 (1978) by buying me about 10 packs of cards of whatever was in season each time we visited or he came to visit us. May I be so fortunate to be that uncle to one of my nephews or grandpa to one of my grandkids when the time comes!!

3-I am thankful for each and every person I’ve traded with, sold to, or bought from at every mall show, flea market, and card store over the decades. Each exchange was a small link in a massive chain that got me the collection I have today. I have far more fond memories than I do cards, but it was fun all the way!!

4-I am thankful for all of the dealers who stock common cards from the last few years (especially when I finally get around to sorting my piles of cards 6 months after they came out and realize that I need #233 and #408 to complete my set). I am also thankful for dealers who throw in an empty 400-count storage box for the new wax box I just opened or a toploader for a great insert card in the pack I just bought.

5-I am thankful for my 9 year old daughter, who although she does not like sports cards at all, still shares my enthusiasm in collecting her Bella Sara and Pokemon cards.

If we spent the time to list every thing we should be thankful for, we would need more than one day to do it. A hobby like card collecting can certainly be one of those things.

Happy Thanksgiving All!!!
