Three memorabilia dealers plead guilty to mail fraud in sales of fake game-used jerseys

The New York Daily News reported on Monday night that three sports memorabilia dealers pleaded guilty to mail fraud on Monday as part of a long-running investigation conducted by the FBI and other federal agencies.

The three dealers were Bernard Gernay of Howell, N.J., Bradley Horne of Sunset, S.C., and Jarrod Oldridge of Las Vegas, who, according to the story “acknowledged that they altered jerseys obtained from retail outlets and other sources to make them appear to be used in games by pro athletes.”

Oldridge is the owner of JO Sports Co., a company with deals in place with 14 NFL teams to sell game-used memorabilia. Gernay is the owner of Pro Sports Investments, while Horne is the owner of Authentic Sports Memorabilia Inc.

Mariners outfielder Greg Halman dead at 24

Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was found dead at a home in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Monday, the victim of a stabbing wound. He was 24.

Halman’s 22-year-old brother was taken into custody for questioning.

In his second season with the Mariners, Halman hit .230 with tw0 home runs and six RBI in 35 games. He hit .299 with three homers and 15 RBI this season in limited action at Triple-A Tacoma. For his career, he was a .251 hitter over seven minor-league seasons with 118 home runs, 332 RBI and 109 stolen bases.

Panini America releases Black Friday shop list

Panini America has given you information about its Black Friday extravaganza with Super Bowl pylon cards to its first MLBPA baseball cards, but Sunday is when the big news came rolling in.

Select dealers across the country are participating in the wrapper redemption programs and collectors wanted to know if their local shop is in. Well, the wait is over as Panini released a preliminary list of participating dealers.

Julius Erving auction nets $3.5 million

One of the most iconic basketball figures sold off his entire collection in auction that ended Sunday.

Julius Erving – better known as Dr. J – got rid of everything from championship rings to watches to trophies and game-worn clothing. The 144 pieces netted Erving $3.5 million at SCP Auctions, based out of Laguna Niguel, Calif. Read More »

Upper Deck surprises with “A Day with the Cup”

The Stanley Cup could show up in some crazy places. On top of a mountain, on a joy ride, or even used to give a child a bubble bath (Remember that ESPN commercial?).

Upper Deck created an unannounced insert set in this year’s 2011-12 NHL Upper Deck Series 1 that showed off how the Boston Bruins celebrated their time with the Cup with an insert aptly named “Day with the Cup,” the company said in a release.

University of Wisconsin aims to stop sales of star quarterback’s baseball cards

Russell Wilson baseball card owners might get a letter from the University of Wisconsin if they have his cards for sale.

Wilson has cards in 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects, 2010 Bowman Draft Prospects and 2010 Topps Pro Debut after he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 draft and played second base this summer for the Class-A Asheville Tourists.

However, Wilson is also the quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers. He transferred there from N.C. State. He has thrown for 2,416 yards and 25 touchdowns for the 8-2 Badgers this season.

FIRST LOOK: 2011 Totally Certified Football

Video cards are coming to football.

Panini America is bringing HRX video trading cards to 2011 Totally Certified Football, which is due out in January.

Panini began the video card experiment with basketball and will be doing a number of similar promotions with it. Just like the basketball cards, the HRX video cards will feature exclusive videos, autographed versions and 1/1 gold autographed versions.

First look: 2011 Topps USA Baseball boxed set

The red, white and blue are back — in boxed set form — once again.

Topps released the basic information for its 2011 USA Baseball box set on Monday — an annual collecting staple that lets collectors get some of the earliest cards of potential future stars years before they might ever play in the big leagues all in one place.

This year’s set, which will include seven autographs, three Relics and a 61-card base set in every box, will arrive on Dec. 14.

Press Pass releases schedule for 2012

Press Pass is releasing a slew of new products for the 2012 racing card season. The company has come out with a preview list of its product line for next year and included are some non-sports titles as well at least three new racing products.

New products means some favorites are off the calendar for now, but Press Pass is trying something different for NASCAR and racing collectors.
