Nutty question: Should the rally squirrel get a 2012 Topps baseball card?

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

It’s now or never for the Rally Squirrel as the St. Louis Cardinals must win Game 6 of the World Series tonight at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to stay alive and force a final game against the Texas Rangers.

We may be nuts, but we have to wonder … will the famed rodent with more than 28,300 followers on Twitter end up having a baseball card in the 2012 Topps set? We’ve imagined it above … We can think of a few collectors — and maybe some tweeters — who would squirrel these cards away faster than you can say “Rocky & Bullwinkle.” And, well, we can think of others who might not.

But this card could happen … a squirrel has had a baseball card before, and the Poley Walnuts 2007 Topps Update card is still a winner. See it — and take our Rally Squirrel poll — after the jump.

Mr. Walnuts had such a presence at Yankee Stadium that Topps made a card — a release that still sells for as much as $30. It’s got to be the best squirrel card around. (Tongue firmly in cheek there.)

Would the Rally Squirrel command as many acorns? Tell us in our series of questions below …

I already have a Poley Walnuts card, so I can’t honestly answer poll question number two. I think if they make this card in the vein of the Uzuki card from a couple of years ago, then it’s worth it (again, this is only if the Cardinals win). Otherwise, you might as well ask Topps to create a Rally Monkey card in the 2002 design.

Topps will 1st have to do a Rally Monkey card from the 2002 Angels season. First do that and then do other rally animals.

I have already purchased an un-official one off of ebay in the ’87 design, and would be thrilled if they included one in an upcoming set. I admit I am a huge Cardinals fan, but I do agree that this only makes sense if St Louis wins the series. The only other way to do it is if they did a full insert set of them with Rally Monkey and others included. I think this would fit in great with the Opening Day set.

Someone already made some rally squirrel cards and has sold them on ebay. The best one is in the 1987 Topps design and is actually very well made. I bought several so years down the road when my kids (age 1 and 2 right now) ask me what the hell this squirrel thing was about I can tell the remarkable story about the 2011 Cardinals, and how the squirrel represents the last 2 months of the season (nuts). If Topps makes one, I’ll buy 3.

i like the idea. why not? it’s a neat event and a cool part of the history. i would rather see cards of rally animals than bush and nolan ryan trying (and failing) to play catch. how about a subset with all of ‘em? even that unfortunate bird that got hit by the big train! let’s just not go crazy with the pricetags, though please.
