Back in August, we brought you news of the 8D Network‘s soft launch at the National Sports Collectors Convention.

Now, the launch is official as the first auction will launch next month and end in early December. Meanwhile, several athlete’s causes’ websites have been showcased under the 8D umbrella.

For those who don’t know, the 8D Network is a way for athletes to have their causes be found and a portal to help bring the casual fans into the sports memorabilia world while bringing the memorabilia collectors in as well all in once place. If needed, it also offers support for those groups to have websites built.

Next Topps UFC product includes fistographs & more

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Collectors often say they want more in a product and in the forthcoming 2012 Topps UFC Knockout they’re going to get just that via the Fistograph.

What’s a Fistograph? It’s an over-sized box-topper that includes not only an autograph but an inked print of a fighter’s fist — you know, an impression of what makes an impression in the sport, albeit typically inside a glove.

Ten different fighters will sign and ink up for the box-toppers in the high-end hobby-exclusive product that will include a hit in every pack and two autographed Relics, two autographs and four Relics in every box. For a look at what else can be found, see a gallery of some cards in the product arriving on Jan. 25 after the jump.

Al Davis’ legacy not reflected on many cards

By Chris Olds | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor

Al Davis, the controversial owner of the Oakland Raiders and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, died on Saturday. He was 82.

A maverick owner whose mantra was “Just win, baby,” Davis built a franchise with an iconic silver- and- black-laced image — one that won three Super Bowls and four conference titles. In the last 15 years, though, his team had just three winning seasons.

Although he was not a player, he was an assistant coach, head coach, GM, owner and the AFL’s commissioner during a life lived in football. He also was a character — and that has led to 15 trading card appearances through the years, according to the Beckett.com database.

From the Just For Fun file …

If you don’t know who Keenan Cahill is, you’ve probably been living under a rock — or at least not spending a lot of time on YouTube recently.

For those who don’t know Cahill’s story, he’s a 15-year old Illinois high-schooler who suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Mucopolysaccaridosis, a metabolic affliction that stunts growth and physical abilities. Despite this, he’s become a bit of a viral phenomenon with more than 300 million views of his lip-synching videos on YouTube — popularity that has had him in videos with 50 Cent, Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, The Miz and many more celebs.

It’s also a feel-good kind of story that has touched on the world of Major League Baseball. Watch the clip above for a rather surreal performance from Cahill and a certain eccentric member of the San Francisco Giants, a video that’s been viewed more than 2.5 million times, itself.
