First look: 2011 SP Game-Used Soccer

By Andrew Tolentino | BSCM Editor

Upper Deck is taking its familiar SP Game-Used brand name to a different kind of football next month.

Yesterday the company leaked a few images and product information about its 2011 SP Game-Used Soccer line, which is scheduled for a November arrival. This comes as big news for fans whose card options are typically limited to the major manufacturer’s once-a-year release.

Living up to the brand legacy and the stated hit-heavy box breakdown, SP Game-Used is a GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL that soccer collectors have been waiting for.

Upper Deck’s other other football line offers an earlier opportunity to collect the cardboard debuts of Charlie Davis, Pavel Pardo and Benny Feilhaber. Now with another opportunity to capture player allure, SP Game-Used Soccer will also feature the first Rookie Cards from fresh-faced Juan Agudelo and Alex Morgan.

The six-pack box break offers a new level of hits for soccer collectors with By The Letter Game Used Nameplate cards, Career Legacy Dual and Triple memorabilia cards and Supreme Fabrics over-sized patch cards. While these might be familiar elements in other sports cards, their inclusion in 2011 SP Game-Used is an undeniable upgrade for the ironically overlooked world sport.

Here’s the all-important skinny on box breakdown and beyond:

The break, by the numbers

  • Three cards per pack
  • Six packs per box
  • One autograph or memorabilia card per pack (Six of either per box, on average)
  • Three numbered Rookie Cards per box

Set details

  • 60 Regular (base) cards
  • 16 Authentic Newcomers numbered to 499
  • Eight Authentic Newcomers numbered to 99

Stay tuned to Beckett.com as more information on Upper Deck’s latest soccer line becomes available.

Sounds too expensive for me and I am a big MLS fan. I’ll be looking to pick up some of the base set online.

I can’t wait! One (American) soccer product a year is never enough.

I hope that “B” on the Beckham card is a mock-up and not a manu-patch. The letters on the back of MLS unis look nothing like that.

I know this is a “high-end” product, but the inclusion of serial-numbered RCs are disappointing.

Other than that, looks good.

Hopefully this means a few more Heather Mitts memorabilia and autograph cards

just busted almost a case…the auto’s are pretty random and don’t come in every box…or at least not the boxes i got. although, like the hockey, in more than one box i got the same player jersey (out of 6 packs, i got 4 jersey cards of the same guy)…that was pretty disappointing.
