Box Busters preview: 2011 Timeless Treasures Football

By Andrew Tolentino | Football Editor

In a soon-to-post Box Busters episode, collectors can watch a two-tin break of 2011 Timeless Treasures Football. But before that, we fired up a scanner to preview Panini America’s new, six-card-per-pack pigskin product.

As the gallery (from a single tin) indicates, the hits are consistent, but their magnitude is a little less stable.  More often than not though, “hit or miss” is the best way to describe a low-quantity$100 gamble like this one. Greats like Red Grange, Jim Thorpe and Troy Aikman headline the brand new brand, but their cards aren’t (and shouldn’t be expected) in every pack.

What appears on a Panini video card, anyway? (w/poll)

YouTube Preview Image

By Chris Olds | Beckett Basketball Editor

Not long ago, the idea of a video trading card arrived with a lot of noise.

Since then, particularly since their arrival, there’s only been one noise — cha-ching! – as the Panini HRX cards have commanded some serious cash at times on the secondary market.

Vintage: Does what’s new define what’s old? (w/poll)

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor | Commentary

What’s vintage?

The answer to that might vary depending on how old you are or when you started collecting. Or, it might vary depending on what you collect.

To me, that’s an interesting thought.

Your turn: Obsessin’ over Ovechkin

By Andrew Tolentino | Hockey Editor

In preparation for the forthcoming issue of Beckett Hockey, we’re brewing our own list of reasons that justify all the obsessin’ over Alex Ovechkin. But we wanted to turn the microphone over to his loyal hobby fans as well.

Is it his visor? His Rookie Card from 2005-06 The Cup? His I’m-not-afraid-to-lose-a-tooth-or-two grill? Leave us a comment explaining why he’s your player, and who knows — your words might appear in the Top 10 reader reasons section featured in the November issue.

Which would you rather have?

Entrepreneur John Rogers knows the worth of a few pictures – and it’s good business

Details on how you can own this framed Conlon Collection print of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson can be found in the upcoming Vintage Issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, which arrives next month.

By Chris Olds | Beckett Baseball Editor

The old saying is that a picture’s worth 1,000 words, but John Rogers knows that they can be a bit more valuable than that.

So he’s made them his business.

The Arkansas entrepreneur is a noted collector — he paid $1.62 million for a Honus Wagner T206 card in 2008 — but the next step for him was to own the original pieces that have made a few baseball cards in the past but really are items that have helped shape something much more impressive, something more indelible.

Steiner has the rights to handle all licensed products for Rivera’s record, including caps and t-shirts, as well as its autographed and game-used products related to the record.
