Poker as a sport? Maybe.
But poker in trading card form gets no argument.
Leaf is coming out with its latest poker release next month, updating last year’s set with new inserts that should delight poker fans.
Any night owl will know the poker players on these cards. Flipping through channels late at night, you can probably find a poker game between ESPN’s multiple airings of the World Series of Poker to NBC’s Poker After Dark or the any other incarnation cable networks air.
However, the product isn’t limited to just poker celebrities, but also includes entertainment and sports stars who love the game. Jason Alexander (who played George Constanza on Seinfeld) and former baseball players Jose Canseco and Orel Hershiser also appear in the set.
Poker players, however, make up the bulk of the autographs with some of the all-time greats getting in the mix. Doyle Brunson has multiple autographs including a nickname set where he signs the card “Tex Dolly.”
Collectors could expect dual autos aptly named Pocket Pairs with players such as Brunson and Johnny Chan signing the same card.
Poker trading cards returned to the market last year after a three-year hiatus. Last year’s set, included just five cards in each box, but every single – other than Stu Ungar memorabilia cards – were autographed.
Based on the preview images from 2011, it looks to be more of the same from Leaf.
