So I noticed something fun on Bryce Harper’s 2011 Bowman card …

By Chris Olds | Baseball Editor

Firmly in the Just For Fun category …

Some baseball cards just get looked at more than others — the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. card, the 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken, the 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco. There are countless cards that people examine to know every little detail.

That’s what we do if we’re collectors.

For some like the Griffey, it’s the hair, the gold chains, the little things. For the Ripken, well, you know … For the Canseco, it’s a combination of how to tell if it’s real while marveling at that moustache — if you can call it that.

But I noticed a little something on the 2011 Bowman Bryce Harper card that every one seems to be treasuring — or at least selling — these days.

I’ll let you guys guess what it might be — I’m not telling. It’s simple, trivial, and it adds a little “huh” to the card to me.

However, the answer WILL be found on the back cover of the next issue of Beckett Baseball coming soon.

Harper plays Catcher not outfield for starters.

It would appear that this is a picture of him at bat when the Nationals were playing the Atlanta Braves plus it looks kinda like Bobby Cox in the background to the left.

he has his initials on the bottom of his bat… But he is also wearing bracelets

should it not say “Junior college batting record”?

Haha I was going to say it looks like he is missing a finger on his left hand.

Too bad this is not a contest, I think Mr. Olds is refering to the Magnetic bracelet on Harper’s right wrist.

In this picture, he’s not wearing the Nats current uniform, nor is it their Spring Training uni’s, or the Fall Instruction league unis…so the question is, when was this picture taken? Is that really his body?

His face was photoshopped onto someone else’s body.

From Olds: I’ll definitely say NO to that one.

The massive amount of eye black he uses perhaps.

Plus, he is a lefty, why is he wearing a pad on the wrong bicep… or is that a bionic arm? Did Topps blow Bryce Harper’s cover?!

it doesnt say his first card like all the others from this subset do!

His helmet was replaced with the newer design. It’s photoshopped on and it looks to big for his head.

It is really Bryce’s (lesser known, less talented) twin brother Brett in the photo. Also, Billy Ripken wrote the initials on the bat…

Is he wearing lipstick?

This contest is as exciting as stale gum (yes, that one CH). Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

I dunno if this is what you were thinking, but there seems to be a reflection on his helmet that’s kind of interesting. I can’t really tell if it’s the bat or something else, but it doesn’t look like it belongs.

He’s not blowing a kiss to anyone…

I would think real simple….Like it just says Bowman….Not 1st Bowman card etc…..But there are a few other prospects that say this as well not being there 1st bowman card…Thats my guess..

THIS – “It would appear that this is a picture of him at bat when the Nationals were playing the Atlanta Braves plus it looks kinda like Bobby Cox in the background to the left.”

Bryce Harper has never batted in the majors . . . So how is he in a National uniform against the Braves?

Says on the back…

“Belted school record 23 HRs at JC of Southern Nevada” and shows 31 in the totals?

It’s the titanium bracelet on his right wrist. My kids just tricked me into buying 2 of these pieces of junk.

It looks like he may be using an aluminum bat.

I just notice the sun light that is shining on his body versus the light in the back ground. They don’t seem to be shining the same direction.

It looks like the “W” on his helmet was airbrushed on. You can almost see the whole letter. It’s not centered on the helmet.

Since he plays for the Hagerstown Suns, why is he wearing a Nationals’ uniform? Spring training photo no doubt

Could it be what appears to be a sparkle on his right hand ?

lol. Wow, that’s messed up if you ask me. Who cares if his helmet matches, they don’t need to photoshop it on there. Thanks for the link, that helped.

From that link, it looks like they photoshopped the whole upper torso. Do the nats pants have the red piping on them normally or did they take another players picture and add his upper body?

It doesn’t say “1st Bowman Card” because he had a Bowman Card last year, it was a USA card, but his 1st Bowman card nonetheless

I think it has something to do with the text on the back. I don’t have the card in front of me now, but the way something in particular is phrased could be a double entendre.

The magazine should be arriving any day now for the “mystery” to be revealed to all. Haha.

Photos Properties – XXXX prospect playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs Scottsdale Scorpions during the AZ Fall League game at Scottsdale Stadium on October 23, 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Basically it is not a picture of him in a Washington Nationals uniform but it is made to look like it is. Rather odd that this picture was chosen for this card. – Rob -
