Readers Write: Six autographs instead of one

Every once in a while, a letter in the ol’ mailbag stands out … this is one of those letters.

I visited the Tristar Card Show in Houston on Saturday where I purchased a hobby box of 2011 Bowman from one of my favorite dealers.  I returned home and sat down to open it hoping I could get much closer to completing the set.  Like everyone else, I dreamed of a magical moment of pulling a Bryce Harper Auto.  Well, that didn’t happen.  What did happen was very strange and amazing!  I pulled not one or two autos, but six autos! I am not kidding.  I pulled six autograph cards!  I pulled the following:

Blake Forsythe  #BCP81 Blue Refractor Auto 145/150
Greg Halman Base set RC #198 Auto
Lars Anderson Base set #192 Refractor Auto 314/500
Sean Coyle #BCP100 Refractor Auto 015/500
Dee Gordon #BCP80 Blue Refractor Auto 075/150
Wagner Mateo #BCP88 Auto

Have you ever heard of such a thing?  Did Topps just mess up making me the beneficiary of their mistake? Or was this intentional?  It seems very strange to me.  What do you think?

A box like this is a gift, but it’s definitely not intentional. The typical Bowman box should deliver one autograph. You got half of a case. Does this mean that five other boxes were shorted? Let’s hope not. Sometimes, at the end of a packaging run, it’s not unheard of for packs to get packed out regardless of odds. However, it doesn’t happen often. — Chris Olds

Wow!!! And I thought my wife’s 2010 Allen and Ginter box with 2 autos and 2 relics was lucky. Very nice!!

We had 2 hobby boxes of 2010 Upper Deck baseball that had a jersey card in every pack. Over 30 GU cards out of them.

This is unheard of to me. I know there are quite a few boxes that packed out with 2 autos (mostly boxes with a rookie auto and a prospect auto). I also know that colation-wise if you would have gotten a printing plate auto or Bryce Harper auto, they would have been in addition to whatever chrome auto(s) you would have received. But even if all those stars aligned, the box would still be only a 4 auto box. Simply amazing what happened to you.

Well this only proves what happened to me. I went to Target the week that Bowman went live and picked up a pack. Not only did i get one aut, but two autographs from the same pack. I guess Topps might be having collation problems because I guess similar problems came up with Gypsy Queen.

Topps messed up yet again. Be glad that you were the beneficiary of it this time!!!
I think Topps is having as many MAJOR problems with their collation as they are with Quality Control. This is scaring off regular collectors. Topps is prepping themselves for a massive downfall. It doesn’t matter if they are the only company producing MLB cards, nobody will continuously buy inferior products.
I stopped buying new baseball cards as soon as Topps became the only licensed manufacturer. I now only buy MLB cards made in 2008 or earlier. I am now starting to lean more towards the late ’90′s releases. At least they had great-looking inserts back then AND they were harder to pull.

Not to mention that 4 of the “hits” were refractor autos…and 2 were Blue refractors. Congrats on a great box sir!

Last year I purchased a case of Topps Chrome Football and was missing a few autos out of my case. Not only did that happen but Topps customer service was very rude and never sent what they promised. I have always enjoyed their products but will no longer be purchasing them. They are definitely headed downhill unless someone in their organization turns things around fast. I guess I will only be purchasing football from Panini this year unless Topps decides to send me what they promised. Topps? Anyone there? Anyone care?

The week Bowman was released I bought two jumbo boxes, and one of the boxes had six autos (can’t remember who they were. Nobody major to speak of.) But I was happy anways. Maybe Bowman is putting together a 6 auto jumbo box every other case or something. Or maybe its just a mistake.

Sounds like a hot box……. he just has to wait ten years before anyone of the autos might be worth something. I am done prospecting for now just going to stick to HOF’s or the Pujols Ichiro autos 4 now! I am mont going to waste another dollar on a so called the nexy best thing

WOW! Was that all from a hobby box or a Jumbo? If hobby that is quite impressive. By the way the Dee Gordon is probably the best hit!

Brandon, it was a regular hobby box. I consider myself extremely lucky even though the autos may or may not be top prospects. I’m happy.

Everyone, thank you for the kind words. Hopefully, all of you will find a box like this sometime. I know I never will again.
