Even Elizabeth Taylor had cards … but not many

By Chris Olds | Editor

Legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor died Wednesday morning at age 79, leaving behind a legacy of Hollywood greatness.

She appeared in more than 50 films, winning a pair of Academy Awards as best actress, but what she didn’t leave behind was an extensive history of appearing on trading cards.

Taylor appears on just 11 cards in the always-growing Beckett.com non-sport database and six of those cards can be found in the 2009 Americana set from Panini America.

The Hollywood icon was included in the Americana Movie Posters Materials sets (top), where a memorable poster can be found on one side of the card and then a swatch of clothing from the stars of the movie are found on the other.

A total of just 2,350 cards with a piece of Taylor’s clothing embedded inside were made, the rares being a Triple Material card limited to just 100 copies that includes a piece of her clothing along with swatches from Montgomery Clift and Shelly Winters. That card typically sells for $50 or less.

Taylor also appeared on the iconic 1991 Starline Hollywood Walk of Fame set (above), a popular release for autograph collectors, while the remainder of her Beckett.com-listed cards are from 1950s releases.

Interestingly, she does not appear on any cut autograph cards listed in the database, either¬† — a relative rarity for someone as well-known.

I’d love to see cards issued with 1) Liz as Cleopatra, and 2) Liz in ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.’ It’s the best.

I’m sure once her estate is in order, someone will buy her canceled checks and those will get sold to the autograph market and the later on some of those will get used for “cut” cards.

I have the Hollywood collectors card shown above, and it is autographed. Does anyone know what the card is worth?
