First look: 2011 Topps Opening Day baseball cards

By Chris Olds | Editor

Topps has teased the release of its 2011 Opening Day set with a selection of images that shows us where the annual retail staple is going this year when it arrives on March 7 — ironically well before Opening Day.

The base set for this 99-cent-per-pack product will consist of 220 cards with a smattering of insert sets that include Presidential First Pitches, Mascots, Opening Day autographs Superstar Celebrations and more that includes glow in the dark Under The Lights cards, too.

Each box will include 36 packs with 20 boxes per case and seven cards per pack.

Among the players on the preliminary autograph checklist are: Casey McGehee, Howie Kendrick, Philip Humber, Taylor Buchholz, Jose Mijares, Jonathan Van Every, Jose Morales, Dustin Moseley, Justin Germano and Chris Carter.

While we’ll get more details soon, you can see all of the images after the jump.

Glow in the dark? Interesting..as far as know this has never been done on a baseball card but correct me if Im wrong someone. A booklet card with patches and an on card auto with glow in the dark printing tech might be pretty sweet and different if done right.

It’s been done before. Early 1990s with some Classic prospects cards and later on in some kid-focused products.

Glow in the dark booklets do sound really cool! It’s been done before though. I actually pulled one a looooong time ago when I was in middle school. 1997 Score baseball did a insert set called ‘The Franchise.’ The extremely SPed parallels glowed in the dark. I bought many, many packs trying to get one, and finally pulled a Roberto Alomar. I was so excited! I actually just pulled it out of its sleeve five minutes ago and tried it. It still glows!!!
