We’re closing in on making our selections for The Best of 2009 and want to make sure that Beckett Baseball‘s readers have a say, too.

Best insert set is Upper Deck X Xponential

I gotta be honest Beckett…you seem pretty loyal to Topps, and normally I am right there with you, but not this year. I thought Upper Deck clearly had the better products this year. Honestly, even Upper Deck Icon, which came out early in the baseball season, had rookie cards of Rick Porcello, Matt Wieters, etc. Topps, for whatever reason only known to them, still has yet to produce a Matt Wieters card. How is that possible? If I were Topps, I would fly my CEO to meet with Wieters and have him sign the Topps contract. Did they not learn anything with the whole AROD fiasco? I don’t know…the fact that a collector could bust open an SP Authentic box or Ballpark and pull Gordon Beckham auto’s, Rick Porcello Auto’s, Matt Wieter Auto’s, Ryan Perry, (plus auto’s of Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., Labron James, Evan Longoria, etc…). 2009 was the year for Upper Deck (and this is the 1st time I am ever saying that). Sorry Topps, but you guys got smoked this year…

It’s pretty simple: Wieters signed a deal with a company that would necessitate Topps buying the rights to produce Wieters autograph cards (which would be more expensive than typical). They’re not doing that.
