Hockey card collectors should have it marked on their calendars right … about … now.
Set for Jan. 30, National Hockey Card Day is an event that will take place at Rexall Pharmacies, Toys R Us stores as well as a few other corporate locations and select hobby stores in Canada (A list will be found here.) Sorry U.S. residents, you will lose here — unless you cross the border. Canadian residents often lose out on giveaways and contests here in the states so now they have the upper hand.
The rookies listed on the checklist of cards made for this special release will be Dallas’ Jamie Benn, Atlanta’s Evander Kane, Islanders standout John Tavares, Colorado’s newest star Matt Duchene and San Jose’s Logan Couture. Then there will be veterans like Sidney Crosby and the greatest goalie to ever put on the pads, New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur, Wayne Gretzky (Oilers) and Steve Yzerman among others. All of the players are Canadian-born so this will be a sought-after set on the secondary markets.
The cards will be handed out in pack form and it’s a 15-card set. What I might do is drive to Ontario, catch a junior game, buy some aspirin at Rexall and scarf up some of these great cards. I don’t think I will be breaking any laws but I know I will need my passport to pull this off. To me it’s worth the trip because I sense the Tavares card will be hard to get and could be worth quite a bit down the line.
