Upper Deck has released additional images of cards to be found in its forthcoming 2008-09 Exquisite basketball set.
The set arrives in late July with every box including one autographed rookie patch, one autographed card, one more memorabilia or autographed card, one base card and one additional autographed, memorabilia, parallel or base card.

Goodwin poster sells for $115,271 in Lelands auction

Lelands.com‘s June catalog auction totaled nearly $2 million in items sold during the weekend led by an 1889 Goodwin & Co. advertising poster that topped $115,000.
The poster sold for $115,271. It’s an advertisement for the Goodwin Round Album, which features Hall of Fames Cap Anson and John Montgomery Ward.
A Jackie Robinson game-used bat, which came from his widow, Rachel, sold for $86,165, while a Chicago Bears jersey worn by Walter Payton in his final regular season game went for $53,502.
Other highlights included $27,754 for Roberto Clemente’s signed 1955 rookie contract and several championship ring sales. Those included $22,690 for a Larry Brown ring from Super Bowl XXX, $30,200 for a Michael Carter ring from Super Bowl XXIV, $27,455 for an Anthony Jones ring from Super Bowl XXII, $20,627 for a Guy LeFleur ring from the 1976 Stanley Cup champs, $24,959 for a Boston Red Sox 2007 World Series ring and $22,108 for Sparky Adams 1931 World Series ring.

Los Angeles Lakers' NBA champions Wheaties box lacks punch

One of the first Los Angeles Lakers NBA championship commemorative items announced isn’t one that will set any kinds of sales records because of its appearance.
In fact, it might be one of the least attractive Wheaties championship boxes ever.
That’s what happens when your star player, Kobe Bryant, is tucked in the middle of a team shot — 14 players, 15 “others” by the way. (With a WNBA ad on the side!)
Perhaps General Mills wanted something strikingly different from last year’s box. Or maybe Kobe prefers Frosted Flakes — or Froot Loops — I don’t keep up with endorsement deals.
Or maybe Phil Jackson put his foot down, saying it was a team that won the title and the team should all get a piece of the pie, err, cereal.
This is the second championship Wheaties box for the Lakers, and it will be available nationwide starting next month.

The Crosby Show

It’s 10:25 p.m. in Dallas and Sidney Crosby just won his first Stanley Cup in Detroit. For the record, there are 2,447 Crosby items on eBay at the moment, including almost five full pages of new listings.
Compare Crosby’s showing to that of Red Wings star Henrik Zetterberg, who helped vanquish Crosby’s Penguins last year to hoist the Cup but is being force fed a little role reversal this year. He’s got 429 items for sale right now, including just 29 that are newly listed.
It would appear that another Crosby craze is upon us – and for good reason. The kid who entered the league four years ago with the kind of pomp and circumstance normally reserved for guys named Gretzky — and only guys named Gretzky – skated his first Cup Friday night. That’s huge for hockey and for the hobby.
First look: 2009-10 Topps basketball cards

Topps released the basic images and product information for its 2009-10 Basketball set on Friday, a product that will include 110 Chrome cards as well as McDonald’s All-American cards among its offerings when it arrives in late August.
Each hobby box will include two Relic cards as well as one autographed Relic or signed card in every third box. There will be two numbered Chrome cards per box as well as Relic cards from the NBA All-Star Game and signed NBA Rookie Photo Shoot Patch cards to be found.
The basic set will consist of 330 cards, only 15 of those rookies. However there will still be 15 rookies in the Chrome set.
The Relic lineup consists of Roundball Remnants, Championship Material, All-Star Dual Relics, All-Star Quad Relics, a lengthy list of NBA Logoman Patches as well as Laundry Tags.
The McDonald’s All-American checklist remains TBD, but there will be Rookie Rewind Jumbo jersey cards that are autographed as well as Rookie Rewind Letterman patch autographs. Also among the autographed Relic lineup are Franchise Fabrics — a set that includes Bill Russell, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal and others — while there also will be a standard autographed Relic set
Each jumbo box will include three Relics and one signed Relic or autograph card as well as one numbered Chrome card in every pack.

Going Oldschool Box break: 2001 Score Football

We know you love box breaks so we’ve dug around to find some wax with a little dust on it for some box breaks where we go oldschool.
This box isn’t all that old — just eight years — but its lack of a single autograph or memorabilia card shows the changes that have come over the years. Now, those things are virtual staples of collecting.
This year’s version of Score football arrives in July and has more bells and whistles as well, but the 2001 box holds within it an example of one thing to always remember — just because a box isn’t brand new, doesn’t mean you can’t find some decent cards inside.
Here are the results from a randomly selected box of 2001 Score football cards I recently opened …

Dealer finds Black Sox scandal dual cut autograph of Charles Comiskey & Arnold Rothstein

Jerry Herrin of All-Star Sports & Collectibles in Byron, Ga., wanted to let Beckett readers know all about a significant pull found in his shop from this year’s SP Legendary Cuts – a dual autograph of Charles Comiskey, former owner of the Chicago White Sox and Arnold Rothstein, the man believed to be behind the fix in the 1919 World Series.
He writes: “Mark Corrigan (one of my employees), my wife, Stephanie, and I pulled this card. It is definitely the nicest pull I have ever had. I am not sure what something like this would be worth, but would love to know … the card is definitely for sale. I just don’t know what would be reasonable for such a piece of baseball history.”
While it’s a name-your-price kind of item, we’ll let our readers offer up some guesses on its value. (Why ruin the fun with an estimate right now?)

The ultimate in pro wrestling memorabilia — the steel chair?

There are countless things that wrestling fans could say are the ultimate piece of match-used memorabilia. Perhaps an elbow pad worn by The Rock before it was thrown into the crowd before the “People’s Elbow.” Perhaps a Hulk Hogan torn t-shirt. Or perhaps a “Stone Cold” Steve Austin beer can.
But there’s been one constant in decades of professional wrestling, one item that has weathered the changing landscape of promoters and the always evolving roster of athletes that come and go from arena to arena.
The steel chair.
Really, hasn’t the WWE done more for the steel chair’s existence and mainstream exposure than any other single entity in world history? (Well, other than bingo halls … )
Steel chairs were one item I personally saw more than a few fans carrying around to get autographs at events when WrestleMania XXIV came to Orlando, Fla., two years ago. When the Sentinel did a caricature of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon as a Roman emperor a steel chair was in his hand. Why? Because nothing else seemed to say “wrestling.”

First look: 2009-10 Upper Deck basketball cards

Upper Deck released the basic product breakdown and several preview images for its 2009-10 Basketball set, one of the company’s final fully licensed NBA releases — and one that packs the largest autograph checklist in the product’s history when it arrives in September — before Panini takes over as the league’s exclusive licensee this fall.
The standard set will include 200 cards, 40 star rookies and 55 UD Immortals cards, while the insert lineup will include the UD Signature Collection, Sophomore Sensations autographs (limited to 199), dual game jersey parallels (limited to 150), VS. dual materials parallels (150) and UD Game Materials parallels (150).
Each 16-pack box (20 cards per pack) includes three memorabilia cards (as many as two of those being duals), one autographed card and two lenticular 3D stars cards.
Each case will include three hot boxes where every pack will contain an autograph or memorabilia card.
Retail boxes will include UD Spokesman Signatures cards, while blaster boxes will include 10 packs and one dual-swatch memorabilia card. Retail fat packs will include Sophomore Sensations cards.

Upper Deck sells original card art online

Upper Deck announced Thursday that it is selling original artwork used in recent sets such as Masterpieces and Heroes online at The Upper Deck Store.
The one-of-a-kind pieces of art are from baseball, football, basketball and hockey sets and range in price from $199 to $499 depending on the subject and the artist. The artists’ whose works are being sold include Arthur Miller, Chuck Gillies, Cliff Spohn, Eric Cash, Jeff Suntala, Ken Joudrey, Ron Adair, Ron Lemen, Ron Stark, Stephen Gardner and Tano.
The pieces are approximately 9×12 inches (some larger) and come with a letter of authenticity from Upper Deck.
