The final baseball card set of 2008 will come from Donruss as it brings Playoff Contenders to the diamond later this month.
Its popular football brand has been going since 1998 and the company officially announced its new baseball set ($6 per five-card pack) on Thursday — though it may not have been a surprise after there were Contenders cards found in Prime Cuts.
“This is something we have kicked-around for years,” said Donruss Brand Manager Ben Ecklar. “As we expand our baseball offerings and look at what brands translate well in baseball, the timing was right to finally release Contenders in baseball.”
Included in the set will be 50 standard cards and 100 autographed rookie cards. Among the players with their first certified autograph cards are 19-year-old White Sox 3B prospect Dayan Viciedo, who signed a four-year, $10 million deal after defecting from Cuba.
Other firsts include New York Yankees prospects Pat Venditte, an ambidextrous pitcher, and two-sport athlete Mike Jones, an Arizona State wide receiver. Also included will be 2008 first-round draft picks Buster Posey and Gordon Beckham as well as 2007 first-round pick Rick Porcello.
Chris Olds has collected sports cards and memorabilia since 1987. Before coming to Beckett Media, he wrote about the hobby for the Orlando Sentinel on his blog, SportsStuff, and for the San Antonio Express-News and The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News.
