mankind

We don’t denote Rookie Cards in wrestling — but there are early cards of several stars that seem to generate more demand just like RCs do.

Is it time to examine this niche portion of the hobby a bit closer? After all, there are literally millions of people who watch wrestling several TV shows on a weekly basis and there are two companies are making wrestling cards these days — and that’s more than can be said for a few of the “major” sports.

While ultimately the purchasers of cards are the ones that dictate what’s popular and the cards’ values, cataloging and organizing the information for them isn’t so easy — and in wrestling the RC issue is tough.

Topps released these images in advance of its previously announced UFC set of MMA cards.

It’s interesting to see that the company is utilizing dual autos and autographed Relic cards — that’s the kind of stuff that WWE collectors would have loved to see in any of its wrestling sets produced since 2005.

Rickey Henderson is the only lock for Cooperstown induction in 2009

henderson1

This year’s Baseball Hall of Fame ballot includes 10 first-time candidates, and it’s looking like there could be another small Hall class this summer in Cooperstown.

The only absolute lock among the newcomers is career steals leader Rickey Henderson — unless he decides to suit up for a team this spring. (The Oakland A’s could use him, you know. He’s only 49.)

The other first-timers are Jay Bell, David Cone, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Jesse Orosco, Dan Plesac, Greg Vaughn, Mo Vaughn and Matt Williams, and I don’t see any of them getting in.

New TRISTAR TNA Wrestling set examines stars through eyes of media (updated)

front1

A 10-card subset in the upcoming TRISTAR TNA Cross The Line set that hits stores later this month will include wrestling writers’ takes on a handful of stars in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.

While I rarely write about myself or my collection, yours truly was selected by TRISTAR as one of the writers who selected a wrestler or moment and write that card for the Write Stuff subset. (I agreed to sign on during the summer when I worked for the Orlando Sentinel — before I came to Beckett Media.)

I chose TNA World Champion Sting.

How was I considered a wrestling writer?
