Did you get your free Dr. Pepper on Sunday?

drpepperForget fantasy football. Forget about baseball cards (for just a minute).

I have to ask … did you get your free bottle of Dr. Pepper on Sunday?

As a joke earlier this year, the company promised a free 20-ounce bottle to anyone if Guns N Roses delivered its long-delayed CD Chinese Democracy. Well, Sunday was when it arrived (only at Best Buy stores) and the company paid up via a link (above) to download a coupon on its Web site.

Based on my first listen of the CD, you’re probably better off getting the free bottle (if you can get on the site — it appears to be pretty busy today) and heading to your closest card shop with the $14.

But that’s just me.

Tommy Baxter, a 36-year-old precast concrete specialist from Little Rock, Ark., has accomplished something no one else has been able to do — complete Upper Deck’s 6,661-card Yankee Stadium Legacy Collection.

Baxter, an avid Chicago Cubs fan, is the first collector to piece together Upper Deck’s enormous insert set, which pays tribute to every Yankees home game at the historic venue since April 18, 1923.

Obama graces cover of next Beckett Baseball

beckettbbcoverblog

Here’s a first look at the cover of the next issue of Beckett Baseball. It begins shipping today and should arrive in hobby shops next week.

While we know some collectors aren’t big fans of political cards, many others have spoken as President-elect Barack Obama‘s trading cards have been among the most popular in the hobby. His 2008 Topps card has vaulted all the way to No. 1 on The Hot List because of its dramatic surge in value and the volume of the cards sold in the wake of his election.

Does this Manny Ramirez 2008 Stadium Club card seem odd?

mannycard

Examine the photo on this 2008 Stadium Club Manny Ramirez card closely.

Don’t see anything odd? Head on over to the Cardboard Icons blog where Ben Aguirre Jr. and I have discussed it.

There’s a lot more odd here than you might think. (For starters, where’s the umpire?!?!)

Spectrum of Stars Autographs could pack some punch

cheech

Upper Deck released details on its 2009 Spectrum Baseball set earlier this week, but the details of the latest rendition of the foil- and color-enhanced release are not what caught my eye.

Back for 2009 will be the Spectrum of Stars autographs — and the preliminary checklist looks pretty interesting.

Last year’s set was heavy on hair metal and had quite the selection of names on the initial checklist, so, yes, this year’s set could change before now and February when it’s released.

Right now, it’s heavy on science fiction — Star Trek, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers to name a fewand jam-packed with Kardashians. (While the sci-fi stars have a good amount of certified autographs to choose from, there will still be interest in those cards – if produced.)

Check out the tentative checklist after the jump.

The secret ingredient in Mayo may just be college football autographs

mayo11

One upcoming product that has me particularly excited is the 2008 Topps Mayo Football set that is modeled after the original set of football cards from 1894.

mayo2It’s not so much the standard cards that make me think this could be the football version of Allen & Ginter, but rather the autograph checklists.

They have some huge names in football history, particularly a smattering of big-name college football coaches — along with some odd additions — that could make for some very popular cards.

Here are the tentative autograph checklists from Topps:

Never know what you'll find in Topps' Vault …

toppsvault

One pastime of mine is occasionally visiting The Topps Vault on eBay to see what kind of obscure or interesting items they dig up for collectors.

This one might be one of the most impressive yet. It’s a 1985 USFL proof sheet — which, if you do your math (11 cards per row, 12 rows) means its a complete set of 132 barring any duplicate rows. (I don’t see any.)

Who’s on there? Start with the top row — I see Steve Young and Doug Flutie. Further down? Reggie White, Jim Kelly, Sam Mills, Herschel Walker. It’s not a bad mix of legends’ early cards.

Could UFC champ Brock Lesnar's football cards pick up steam?

lesnarcard

Brock Lesnar is a former WWE champion who bolted the squared circle after a short but successful run for a failed career attempt with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

Now he’s the Ultimate Fighting Championship title holder. Could his football cards (or even his WWE cards) pick up steam?

Just asking the question. (So far, not really, but there are quite a few of his cards available on the auction block.) What do you think?

Here’s a checklist of his football cards:

PSA 8 Mickey Mantle collection set to hit Memory Lane auction block

11857Many collectors have never seen each and every Mickey Mantle card produced during his career.

Fewer have seen them all together. It’s really not a matter of scarcity, but rather high demand for the cards of the former New York Yankees star.

But how many collectors own them all in PSA 8 condition? Not many, but you do have a chance to …

A run of every Mantle card from his career — all PSA 8s — will be sold in the upcoming Memory Lane Inc. Winter Extravaganza Rarities Auction that opens Friday and closes on Dec. 13.

Memory Lane Inc. has several key cards up for grabs in its upcoming Winter Extravaganza Rarities Auction that opens on Nov. 21.

Among the items up for grabs is a T206 Piedmont Sherry Magie error card graded SGC 40, a PSA 5 W600 Sporting Life Eddie Plank, a PSA 9 M116 Sport Life Walter Johnson, a PSA 8 1915 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner, a PSA 8 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth and a PSA 8 1934 Goudey Jimmie Foxx.

If that’s not modern or pricey enough for you, how about a run of PSA 8 Mickey Mantle cards from 1951 to 1969? (I heard your jaw dropping, all the way from here.)

The last Memory Lane auction recorded more than $2.75 million in sales.

TRISTAR will Cross the Line with new TNA Wrestling set

tnafoley

November continues be a good month for wrestling collectors.

While Topps’ WWE Heritage IV has just hit stores, fans won’t have to wait long for another wrestling card fix as TRISTAR‘s second Total Nonstop Action Wrestling card set — Cross the Line — hits stores later this month.

tnastyles1The 100-card base set includes all the TNA stars and several subsets (like the past set, TNA iMPACT!) but adds several new subsets including TNA Debuts (Rookie Cards per se), Drawn to TNA (artwork by the wrestlers as well as a wrestling artist) and The Write Stuff, where wrestling media select their notable moments and stars in TNA history.  (More on that in a later blog entry.)

But, like any set in any sport, it’s really about the autographs and memorabilia cards — and TRISTAR’s set has Topps’ set in a figure-four leglock.

Upper Deck releases images of Barack Obama Lettermen cards

obama

Upper Deck revealed Monday its manufactured patch cards of President-elect Barack Obama that could be found in packs of 2008 Upper Deck Icons Football.

There were “Presidential Lettermen” redemption cards randomly inserted in boxes of the product, which was released in August. Now that the election is over, we know who will appear on the cards. Sales of the redemptions have pushed as high as $100. The cards, when collected together, can spell “President Obama.”

The cards will be delivered to collectors beginning in January.

Next generation of WWE stars' autographs arrives in Topps Heritage IV

natalya

Topps’ latest installment of the popular Heritage line of WWE professional wrestling cards has arrived with a whole new generation of stars signing autographs for Series IV.

Here’s a look at the autograph card debuts for each.

Natalya – She’s the daughter of Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and made her WWE debut not long after WrestleMania XXIV this year in Orlando. So far, early bidding on eBay has this card the leader of the pack (autographs of WWE Divas are usually the strongest sellers). She’s worked in independent promotions for several years, so it’s not just a family pedigree that’s gotten her here.
