Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried opening some boxes from the late 70's and 80's and had them graded by beckett. The main ones that I was wondering about are 1978 topps BB, 1985 topps FB, 1986 topps FB, and 1987 topps traded BB. I was thinking about buying a sealed case of 87 topps traded BB and get them graded and I was wondering if anyone has done this very much. The only time I have done this I bought 6 sealed cases of 1989 score supplemental football sets and I did very well grading them and reselling them. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
The only issue that you can run into with this is centering. Just because it is pack fresh, the centering could be bad enough to make the card a 8.5 or so.
However this method would be one to ensure getting very very good condition cards (corners, edges, surface). |

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
After seeing some of the breaks on PSA's boards pack or case fresh doesn't really mean mint condition. There the are stll printing defects, centering issues, chipped edges, dinged corners, and gum stains.

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
I have seen many people do that. There certainly is a lot of luck involved, but you can certainly make or lose a lot of money trying it. Personally, I would love to try it, but my card budget doesn't allow for that much risk. Certainly, there are others who could absorb a loss easily, but it is nice when they get that 1 or 2 big hits, that bring a pretty penny.
Though you may want to do it PSA. Will certainly increase your chances I believe. |

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
I will only talk from the experience of open a box of 1978 BB.
This sample size is too small to make any real judgments but out of the entire box I pulled five cards worth grading. Centering was a major issue. Print dots were an issue. Corners on the top & bottom cards were always an issue. In other words, the payoff is not there unless you have deep pockets or are a PSA set builder looking for gem commons as well. Otherwise, trying to land Molitor or Murray when you are also dealing with a box that most likely has been tampered with is not good odds. As far as CASE of 1987 Topps Traded. I would think that you would be able to find what you are looking for by buying a case. good luck. |

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
Buying from a reputable dealer is a definate MUST if I decide to do this. The 87 topps traded case doesn't seem that risky to me because you can buy a sealed case with 100 sets for around 250 shipped. The only card I would be interested in would be the Maddux rookie. I would hope to land around 30-35 BGS 9.5's and if I got really lucky maybe a BGS 10!!! Thanks for the opinions so far and I would love to hear from some more people and have them share their experiences doing something like this.

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
I think you're being a little to liberal with 30-35 estimation. But without question you could snag
10 - 15 gems and if you submitted them altogether perhaps you can pull that 10. |

Question about grading pack fresh or case fresh cards
Deez have you ever busted boxex of 88 fleer basketball for your BGS 9.5 set? I was just wondering because I busted half a box about a year ago and those babies are tough. I did get a bird BGS 9.5, Bird BGS 9, and a Pippen that I am going to send in on my next sub.

I busted 10 packs from a box I pitched in on not too long ago..Not one card that would grade a 9 most looked like 6.5's and 7's really bad centering and print defects..Very tough cards indeed.. If you ever get any 1988 fleers in BGS 9.5 you wanna part with keep me in mind
