jmh5434 Wrote:The national league is the way baseball is supposed to be played if a pitcher can't run the bases without getting hurt then he has some issues. Had Wang been conditioned to run the bases, I'm willing to bet he wouldn't have gotten injured (I didn't see the play), I'm also willing to bet, unlike the NL, the AL pitchers spend very little time running the bases or trying to hit. |

ONe of the most MORONIC things I have read on these boards in a long time! To be able to repeat your delivery over and over again, to pitch with precision, to be able to hit AND pitch, to be able to pitch on a downhill mound, and to keep coming back for more every 5th after beating your body to shredds the previous outing, that's an athlete. Oh, and do you know that a large majority of pitchers in the MLB were their high school teams shortstop? I get the biggest laugh watching pitchers hit, the good ones. Like Hampton, or Owings, or Carlos Zambrano. They rarely take BP, they get 5% of the at bats at everyday players who GET PAID TO HIT, yet they have a better avg, obp, etc then the "professional" hitters. skrip |

I remember hearing Mark Grace say he never understood why a pitcher wouldn't want to hit, they can always help their own cause.

Have you ever pitched in your life? Besides 3 times in little league? Pitching is the most unnatural thing in sports is throwing a baseball. Your body is meant to pitch underhand. That is why softball pitchers can keep throwing and throwing. Your shoulder is NOT meant to throw a baseball overhand. Let alone throwing 165 pitches (after bullpen and warmups) at full speed in a single day or 3 hour period. I pitched in college. I had a bum shoulder. I had terrible pain my entire freshman year, but refused to give in. I took 6-10 advil a game just to pitch. I had surgery on my shoulder after my frshman year, and it only got worse. Again, i would take 8-10 Advil a day just to be able to throw bullpens and pitch in the game. I would run for 30 minutes every night to get blood flow to my shoulder. I would have to do treatment, ice and stim twice a day. I would go in for rehab on my shoulder twice a day. I did everything in my capabilities to try to get my shoulder better and to be able to pitch. But guess what, shoulders suck and that was it. I did this for 5 years, I loved the sport, I loved my team, and I love playing ball in college. Sorry, but that isn't being fragile. That is called dealing with the hand god gave you, and shoulders aren't meant to pitch a baseball. But since you have probably never played the game at a truly competitive level, I doubt you to understand it. skrip |
