Listen to this story.....05-06 the cup case purchase?
As some of you may know, i broke a case of 05-06 the cup on youtube about a year ago. Did it at a local hobby shop in the pittsburgh pa area. Anyhow, i go into the store yesterday and the owner asks me what i can get a case of 05-06 the cup for. I ask him if he is gonna hold it or break it. He says that he thinks he will break it. So i suggest to him, why don't i buy a case as well, we will open up both cases live at his shop and video tape them on youtube. we will then "get rid of" all the cards and split the gain or loss 50/50. cup is currently about $3550-$3600 a case. i lost about $400 on my previous cup purchase and that was when i paid $3150. i would just him buy his case, but aren't the chances of pulling a crosby better if you get 2 cases instead of 1?! of course they are! the thing that has me nervous is: 1) hockey season over the prices tend to drop a little bit and 2) alot of the rookie cards from that year didn't fair so well in the last beckett. this would totally be a rip and sell decision. thoughts?

Personally, I would rather invest my money in an actual card or card than buy a case and "hope" that I make some money on it.

That being said, what effect will the Pen's Stanley Cup loss have on the value of Crosby's cards? I believe that they are artifically high based on the expectations that he will break records and win Stanley Cups. In his first chance, he didn't make it. This may not be a big deal to some people, but other collectors will start to get a little nervous about investing thousands of dollars into his cards.

At the start of the Wings/Pens series, I wondered what would happen to Crosby's cards if the Pens didn't win and soon we will find out. Honestly, if you are a true Crosby fan, this might be the time to buy, but not such a good time to sell!

Good Luck!

if it's total rip and sell and neither of you are planning on keeping anything whatsoever, i say do it. you're both putting in 50% and splitting the profits or losses down the middle so it sounds great.

we talked about this yesterday. crosby had a pretty good playoff and with him being so young, no reason to panic. plus with the pens about to sign malkin longterm, they can be together for a long long time. ovechkin is the real deal also, but a huge drop off after those 2 rookies. we would almost have to pull a logo shield or something huge if we didn't hit the crosby/ovy to have a chance at making money.

In all likelihood, you'll get two shots at making money, one per case in the foam packs. If those cards are relatively junk, you're screwed. If they're huge, you make out like a bandit.

That being said, there are still a few Crosbys, Ovys and auto/shields left to be pulled and who's to say they wouldn't show up in one (or both) of your two cases?

I think this would be a bit more than just rip and sell. It's more rip and pray...then sell and hope. If you're good with the potential loss, though, I say do it and have a ton of fun. If you make money off it, all the better! Big Grin

I posted my thoughts on another thread, but,... say you hit a #/87 Crosby Gold, an Ovechkin #/99, or anything else except a Crosby #/99,... it'll be tough to break even at $3600 or so. Foam can be really fun, but I remember enough Brule Gold #/17's, Thornton Limited Logos, Brodeaur Emblems of Endorsements, Ovechkin Sig Patch, Crosby Honorable Numbers, Phaneuf #/99's, Ovy/Kovy Sig Patches, Lundqvist AU press plates, etc. etc. for foam hits. (some you wonder why there was foam,...)

Break it for fun, but your chances of pulling something to break even is really tough,... however, it is the best hockey product ever!!! So GOOD LUCK on breaking - great that you got to share the gains/losses too. Smile

I'd say do it. I bought a case a while back at $3400 and didn't hit a single decent rookie, nothing that sold for over 120 anyway. But my other hits were very good and almost made up for the case themselves. Don't forget all the crazy set/player collectors out there waiting for their card to be listed...
And come on, it would make for some intense entertainment!!!!

I agree on this point entirely. Half the risk and all the fun sounds good to me.
In fact, if someone wanted to go half with me, I think I would do it.
