Team Collectors Thread - July 2008
July 31st Trades:

Red Sox
Jason Bay

Dodgers
Manny Ramirez

Pirates
Andy LaRoche
Brandon Moss
Craig Hansen
Bryan Morris

White Sox
Ken Griffey Jr.

Reds
Nick Masset
Danny Richar

Marlins
Arthur Rhodes

Mariners
Gaby Hernandez

I think some teams did better than others :?
I'm really surprised in the Reds only getting a reliever and minor league infielder
I'd like to see what, if anything, the Mariners offered for Junior.
I think Dodgers-Sox-Bucs all did pretty well.
Marlins did good to get Rhodes... Mariners got Gaby ? ? ? WHY ? ? ?

Happy to be an Angels fan Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I'm kinda having mixed feelings about the Griffey giveaway to the Sox. I've always liked him, but this season he just seems to be having such a tough time in the field and inconsistent at the plate and doesn't seem to know how to react to it.

When he lost his range in CF (if you watch him everyday you can tell) he balked at moving to right and the manager's hands were tied until he finally just did it.

He got better at playing right during the second half last year, but this year way too many balls drop in front of him and he has made some dives for balls that just looked awkward like Willie Mays in '73. I've rooted for him for his whole career and especially the last 8 1/2 years. Nobody was as happy as I was in Feb 2000, but it's been very disappointing that they have had so many losing seasons and he has not been the Griffey he was in Seattle. He did have some good moments in Cincy and I'm glad I got to watch him daily. The fans in Cincy have always loved the blue collar player more than the superstar with the exception of the Big Red Machine which was a collection of superstars working together to win. The talk shows have dogged him and in Cincy the fans hear it every day. It gradually influences thinking, hearing the same people call in and dog him daily. It's really sad listening to them and their promos about the trade today, calling him a half-_ss ballplayer. I really don't think that was appropriate.

On the other hand, I sense that he has been a bad influence on some of the Reds who seem to be okay with losing. He never gets on anyone or sets any kind of example (loafing down the line on ground balls- I hate that but everybody does it now). I see it carrying over into Adam Dunn and I think others resent it that Griffey got so much freedom. Griffey was rumored to be upset that Hamilton got so much attention last year, and some speculate that influenced the trade. I don't think it did.

The incident a few weeks ago where he cursed at the lady that had been asking for autos every inning and finally just letting him have it was not good press. He did take them an autographed ball after one inning. Then the Jeff Brantley thing was just too much of an embarrasment for the team ownership. Brantley called out Griffey on the air about not getting to a catchable ball and commented that the booing fans should have booed more. Griffey stated that Brantley should have known better (maybe), and then after a Homer vs Rockies, Griffey did a thoat slash gesture toward Brantley and dropped the bomb to the booth on TV. I think it was a little out of character and if he is having a better year, he lets it go.

I wish Griffs Reds career had ended a little better, but it is what it is now. I'm really disappointed that we didn't get a little more value, but maybe the Reds feel they made an addition by subtraction. I guess that remains to be seen. I for one hope Junior gets in the Series, which isn't going to happen in Cincy for a while.

Sorry for the long rant. Wayne, I'm not sure your Sox helped themselves this year, but I think Bay will be very good for them.
Nim, I think the Angels have greatly improved themselves. The Pirates got some good players that will help them today.

I have someone interested in becoming my Tier 2, so I sent him the info, and he is just on the other side of town, so that's cool.

Hiya TCs:

Barry, glad you're back. Had any good BBQs lately? Looks like the trades brought you a new player in Hickory. Please enjoy.

Did you guys like the trades. I want to hear what Dodger Dave thinks about Manny in La-La land. This is a story that is worth watching. Glad Junior if finally going to a winner. I hope he makes it all the way to the series. Maybe a subway series this year. Beat the Cubs. (sorry Monty).

John, glad you liked the package. Aren't those minis neat. I got a few of them and spread them around to the TCs

Jaycob: Happy Birthday young man. You're celebrating it right. Nothing like a woman to love you and baseball all day long.

Wayne: You really called it with Bay. I love him as a player. I think you did all right and the Sox fans will love him. Just remember, he still makes outs sometimes.

Cardinals stand pat, at least for now. Garcia coming back and Stanonova will be going back to Memphis. Carpenter is back and Wainwright is about three weeks away. Bring on the Cubs...

Have a great night everyone,
Ironman

Mail call. Thanks to our new A's collector, Chris Donati. He sent two team bags loaded with most of the 2008 Upper Deck set, some great Throwback threads cards, and a few other assorted brands. I added at least six or seven new cards. Thanks Chris. Some A's will be making their way to you soon.

Monty,
I have some Patriots doubles. I am sure I can find some Andre Tippett for you. He was a great player. I think my son has his autograph. He plays in the local PGA tournaments Pro-AM day. We went a few years ago and scored tons of auto's. If it was on something that was not covered with several auto's, I would have given it to you.
