BA Hot Sheet = Insider Trading
The BA Hot Sheet is a joke.

I bet the Editor's at BA base their report upon their stash of Bowman Chrome and Elite Extra Edition rookie cards.

In the broker/dealer world, that's called "Insider Trading."

Because the statistics have nothing to do with the rankings...

Hmmm... Like the Beckett Hot List, that often is completely off of whats really selling... Do you think Beckett features players and cards the editors want to sell???

Maybe its just me, but i think the BA list has far less effect on pricing than it used to.

This could be due to the inreased prospector population, who pretty much already know who's gonna be on the list before its posted due to increased research, or it could be due to people knowing its not wise to chase the guy who's hot this week, since odds are he'll cool off next week.

I still love the BA list as a basis for discussion, and friendly argument.

To call it Insider Trading is a bit much, but i'm guessing you were mostly kidding.

Insider trading is when i hack the site, find the article before its printed, and buy up those cards like CRAZY.

Hope someone has a cheap buy it now on Matt Dominguez sometime in the next 20 minutes........OOPS I"VE SAID TOO MUCH Smile

Sure they do. Just not nearly as much as a prospect's projected ceiling. BA freely admits as much. This is why guys like Carp and Michael Taylor will never be #1, no matter how well they do. On the other hand, if Maybin goes 10-20 for the week, boom. Top dog.

Here's a question that I asked in a recent Hot Sheet chat:

Q: JAYPERS from IL asks:
I have a hypothetical situation that I hope you'll answer. Prospect A ranks in the 1-5 range for his respective team's Top 10 Prospects list in the BA Handbook. He goes 8-20 for the week, with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 2B, 2 BB and 6 K's. Prospect B ranks in the 6-10 range on his team's list. He goes 14-20 for the week, with 5 HR, 10 RBI, 5 2B, 1 3B, 4 BB and 2 K's. Which prospect would rank higher on the Hot Sheet?

A: Ben Badler: What position does the player play? How old is the player? What league is he in? Is the player's home park and league favorable to hitters or pitchers? What are the player's tools? A guy in the 6-10 range for a team like the Rays or the Red Sox could be the top prospect in the Astros or White Sox system. We're not just plugging the numbers into a spreadsheet and spitting out the top names... we use that as our starter kit, but the evaluations take on more depth than the raw outputs.

Anything can be manipulated. "Insider Trading" might be off the mark but "Payola" is a possibility.

Bingo! If you want a list of the 13 players who had the best stats for the past week, just go to milb.com or BA.com and LOOK UP STATS and sort by the previous week!!! Anyone can do that with ease, so why do you need someone else to do it for you?

BA's job is to do all the rest, and actually evaluate the players as MAJOR LEAGUE PROSPECTS - not on the basis that they put up a nice week of stats in the minors. Give me the 20-year-old hitting .300 in AA over the 22 year-old hitting .390 in high-A all day long!!!!! Age, and more importantly Age vs. level of competition is the single most important prognostic factor for future success at higher levels, which is what it is all about - the likelihood of a player succeeding in the MAJORS. No one cares if Joe Schmoe or some mid-level prospect is tearing the cover off the ball in A-ball when there are players his same age holding their own in AA or AAA.
