BGS is good for grading modern stuff. BVG is an absolute disgrace to vintage cards. As a vintage collector I have no tolerance for them grading sheet cut vintage cards as 9.5 gem mints and not putting on thier slab that the card was sheet cut. Before everyone says that PSA does the same thing let me tell you that if the card was released in pack form PSA will not grade cards that have been hand cut from sheets. BVG absolutely does this and it is a big reason why BVG is the equivalent of BCCG as far as vintage grading goes.

I agree. Look at for example a BVG 8 against a PSA 8. Or even worse a BVG 7 or 8 versus a PSA 9 (OC). Was even easier to compare the generalizations when Beckett (BVG) included their subgrades on vintage cards until recently. Tough to base your entire claim on sheet cuts. Look up any hall of famer from the 60's and 70's and it is almost downright impossible to find a BVG 9 or 9.5, I am very happy if I can find an 8.5 Not to mention the card is safely and securely encapsulated for life in a slab like Fort Knox, which is more than I can say for the PSA case where you can shake it side to side and watch the card move! Not here to bash PSA but BVG definitely has its fans. There are far fewer versions of BVG submitted out there than PSA so when you see a premium grade it typically sees a ton of bidactivity...

Whenever there is a BVG 9.5 that sells on Ebay why do you think it sells for about 20% of what a PSA 10 would bring? It is because the BVG 9.5 was sheet cut. I have personally owned 2 BVG 9.5 cards that were sheet cut. The first one was a 1961 fleer Jim Otto rookie and the 2nd was a 1972 topps Wilt Chamberlain card. These cards as BVG 9.5's brought about 500 each on ebay while PSA 10's of the same card sell for over $2000.00 each. Just look at what BVG 9.5's bring compared to PSA 10's!!!! It's not just the set registry.

You're right, it is not just the set registry, although that plays a huge part and has been very frustrating to say the least among BGS/BVG collectors in here. When looking at stuff pre-1980, look how many collectors use PSA as opposed to BVG and the submittal totals for each particular card, player or set. I do not feel that BVG 9.5's sell for 20% of PSA 10's although they do sell far considerably less, but using gem mint for an example on 30 or 40 year old cards (or 50 in the Jim Otto example) is kind of ridiculous. Just simple comparisons of 8's to 8's etc. is easier to gauge. Popular players like Nolan Ryan etc. still pull serious cash regardless of the grade. I would love to find a '72 Chamberlain in BVG gem for $500. Like I said more people complile sets and save searches on PSA vintage as opposed to BVG, it all comes down to simple economics when comparing the two different markets. Like I said in my original post BVG has its fans (I like the display appeal and solid secure cases for long-term over PSA's cheap-looking flimsy things) but I was not slamming PSA vintage, it's almost like comparing apples to oranges. It'd be a bit easier to put them in the same bucket if Beckett had a similar registry though.

BGS does grade sheet cut cards but I'm willing to bet some have also made their way into PSA holders as well.

Can anybody give me one good reason why Beckett grades sheet cut cards that were distributed in pack form? To me a sheet cut card and a card that was in a pack is not the same thing(especially vintage cards). As long as beckett continues this practice there vintage grading will be a joke and third best behind psa and sgc......a very distant third I might add.

I mostly post on the PSA boards these days since this site is pretty dead but let me say this... I personally have been speaking with a guy from the PSA boards who is a everyday contributor who sends in TONS of sheet cut cards to PSA and yes they ALL get holdered and SGC is no different..... You can believe me or not doesn't really matter to me none but just throwing that out there for ya to think about... This is not just a BVG problem... wasn't the holy grail wagner PSA 8 a sheet cut too??
