FrankToronto http://www.torontocardshow.com Wrote:If the Leafs are in rebuilding mode and if Wilson's contract is for 4 years then you can be sure that they are then you definitely want to pay $3M to McCabe and slip in a rookie for a couple thousand. It's good financial management and good operations management if Toronto is rebuilding.

I'll give credit where it's due as well. McCabe, while not the best defensively, overall is a great player and a great talent. Like Ryder if he leaves Montreal, McCabe will be a great asset to the right team should he move out of Toronto. The problem isn't that McCabe is a bad player. The problem is that he's dearly overpriced considering his defensive ability (which was pitiful this year) and the huge drop off in offensive production which has always made his mediocre defensive skills swallowable in the past. If Toronto is rebuilding then you certainly don't want to be playing him at $5.75M. He was paid that amount under the expectation that Toronto would be a contender.

I'd rather see Kubina stay than McCabe. He, too, was terrible defensively throughout the year. But I don't think we saw a true Kubina until the end of the year. He's a better value than McCabe, so long as he's healthy.

McCabe is a bargan next season and is only paid 4.1 million in 09-10 ( ithink). Look at what Souray got last summer even with his injury history. Puck moving D are the hawtest thing in the NHL right now. According to the FAN 590, McCabe has already agreed to waive his NMC if it is to a team in the East. Marc Streit might hit 4.5million on the UFA market in a few weeks so my guess is that McCabe will be in Montreal and Streit will be in NYR. Just a guess lol

Actually, the Leafs are in a bubble, they can't buyout Kubina, McCabe, Tucker and Blake because it would destroy their salary cap for the next few years. Only thing they can do is trade them, but to tell you the truth I'd rather keep them all.

If I am the leafs right now the first thing I do tomorrow morning is buy out Darcy Tucker. Of the "Fab Five" who refused to be dealt, he offers by FAR the least to the team, and they could use a little extra money to take a stab at someone else.

Kubina was arguably the best Leafs defenseman last year. If anything, Kubina might be dealt during the draft this coming Friday. If it was up to me, I'd stick with Kubina and Kaberle, hope for Coliacavo's to stay healthy and develop the younger guys like Stralman. I'd also do whatever possibly to snag one of hte big D-men from the draft, preferrably Alex Pietrangelo.

As far as buyouts and the Leafs go, I think that you really have to consider waiving Jason Blake and Darcy Tucker. Blake is grossly overpaid and Tucker's deminishing talent is not worth the salary that the team pays him.

Hopefully it's Kubina and McCabe, unless somehow they stay and play their hearts out like if it were their last game.

I doubt the Leafs buyout a single player...it is not a very prudent solution to anything...

Based on McCabe's salary, I'll just give a very rough estimate off the top of my head, you'd rather pay him $3+ million (both in real dollars and cap dollars) to play some place else...instead of $5.75 million to play for you? That's not good management...

I thought McCabe was adequate this year...I usually bash the [crap] out of him...but really, he wasn't as bad as he's been in year's past...ya know, I further that, McCabe has really become underrated on internet message boards...people got so caught up in his defensive lapses, everyone thinks he's absolute garbage...his play was adequate this year...I'll give credit where credit's due...some people would have you believe he's the worst defenseman in the league...he's far from worst on the team...

Kubina I thought played fairly well this year as well...

Buyouts are last ditch efforts...teams would trade for these players...the Islanders and Rangers have inquired about McCabe in the past...Kubina drew interest at this past trade deadline...they will not be bought out...

I agree,I can't see the Leafs buying out many plaers at all Raycroft maybe?. Everyone talks about Kubina and Mccabe but to be honest i think these gusy do have trade value..Kubina played great after the trade deadline finish the season with 40 pts and was a + player on a bad team. When you look around and see what other players are getting ie Redden at 6.5 mil was awful so when you look at Kubina at 5 mil it isn't that bad. According to the Fan Mccabe said he will waive his nt to go to the NYI he lives there in the off season. Im all about the Leafs rebuilding but buying everyone out is not the wise thing to do imo...now if we can trade thses guys which i think we can then i say bring it on. We'll just have to wait and see what Cliff does...can't wait for the draft next FridayBig Grin.

I was listening to prim time sports a few days ago and according to them a deal with the sharks was done at the deadline until Kubina said NO. To Sharks: Kubina
To Leafs: Kyle McLaren(not sure if a pick was involed or not).

Anyone know how much Kyle makes??

GO LEAFS!!

Now that this thread is back...it wouldn't be so bad for the Leafs to buyout Darcy Tucker...that could be the guy, but I couldn't see any one else really...

Expect Ottawa to buyout Ray Emery tomorrow...which, should it happen, will probably make me wrong...but only in a technical sense...

I said, after the Sens run to the Cup...that "if Emery signs a deal a three years or more, it will be his last NHL contract" Obviously, I was alone in those sentiments because "OMG, Emery took us to the Cup Finals" but now it looks like I'll be wrong because Ottawa will buy him out, and one more team will probably throw $750,000 at him with the hopes that he becomes something...so, I'll probably lose via TKO...

A double-edged "I told you so" ...I'm making progress Tongue

Tucker said he will not waive his NT at all..he thinks he could have got a lot more cash if he signed with another team lastyear, instead he took less to saty with the Leafs. If Tucks wants to stay then he has to play like he used to and earn that 3 mil.... if the Leafs buy him out i think there looking at a 1 mil cap it for 6 years.
