Patrick Roy counterfeit issues?
I'm looking around to purchase Roy's 1986-87 OPC and Topps rookies. Since it's for my pc, I'm going to shop for the ungraded ones. But just wanted to check if anyone knows if there are any issues with counterfeits for these cards?

Thanks

I've never seen a Topps counterfeit for this card, but there are tons of OPC fakes though... Be sure to buy from a reliable seller!

Personally, I would not buy an ungraded Roy RC off eBay unless it was a seller you know wouldn't sell you a counterfeit, either voluntarily or unvoluntarily. The reason for that is that you do not get to inspect the card yourself before making your purchase, so you have no chance of determining whether or not the card is real or fake and also whether the card is actually in the stated condition.

If you can buy it from a shop or directly from a TRUSTED seller (and I cannot put enough emphasis on the word TRUSTED), I would pay a few extra bucks for it.

There have been SEVERAL issues of OPC Roy RCs being faked. I'm not sure about Topps cards, but OPC I know of plenty.

Yeah. I got beat on a OPC Roy Rookie on the bay a year or so ago. I dont do graded cards, so I was just looking for a decent ungraded copy. Card was slightly under Beckett low but I have been able to grab many ungraded but still very nice 80s OPC cards under Beckett low also. When it arrived I compared it to some other singles from the set and it was a NO-GO. I contacted the seller and they seemed fine with a return and refund. One of the few cards that was not a paypal payment but I usually have one or two a month like that so no real worries. Of course I sent the card back and waited. No reply after that, no refund, no trace. The seller's id was suspended at some point well after the auction ended. It stinks but it happens. I still need a Roy and Yzerman OPC rookies at some point but I am in no rush. I can only offer some advice.

1. Use Paypal. I am sure they will cover the transaction if someone scams you.
2. Be wary of No Paypal listings. I am not saying every seller has to take paypal but it is just another thing to watch for.
3. Save your Money Order receipts. I dont remember, but you may be able to recover at least some of the payment. I didnt have mine to follow up on.
4. Everyone can get lucky auction wins. But if it seems TOO GOOD, it may be. Especially on such high profile cards like the Roy Rook.
5. Maybe hold on to the card. I wasnt sure and the seller seemed to be sincere. I knew as soon as I sent the card, I could be beat. Maybe send it certified? Not sure how that will help but they cant claim you didnt send it. Though, if they never respond to contact, that wont matter anyway.

Good luck to ya.

Thanks for the warnings. Just curious, for the OPCs, how do I tell if it's a counterfeit?

Im not sure if its the same way like the Lemieux fake RC I got scammed on..but when I got it, the back of the card was completely different from the rest. One back was light red and the other was dark red...Usually its hard to tell from the front. I heard the fake Roy's have an extra red or blue line on the side..if someone can clarify that for me..

I compared the Roy I received next to some random 86/7 OPC cards. It was VERY VERY Good. Stock was good. I dont remember the extra lines but What got me was the copyright symbol on the front of the card. I looked through a lot of my cards and it was ALWAYS very clear and distinct. The Roy I got just wasnt as sharp. Not terrible and maybe would pass a quick glance, especially without another card next to it. And it wasnt a print error becuase the rest of the card print was flawless. I even remember reading a while ago that this is something you should check right away when the Fakes were Everywhere. Maybe not front page news but you know a lot of those fakes are out there still and the owners may not even know.

I have a Lemieux that I am pretty sure is legit but you never really know unless you pull it yourself. I dont want it slabbed but I would like to have it checked somehow. Card has a VERY VERY VERY VERY small crease in the top center that you have to be almost looking for and in light at the right angle. No reason to get it graded with even the slightest crease. Same reason I didnt get my O/C Gretzky's graded. Anyone know how O/C cards grade anyway?
