IN 5 YEARS TAKE YOUR PICK, ANDREW BYNUM OR GREG ODEN
These guys play 2 completely different styles of basketball - same reason you don't compare Wilt to Russell - just because you play the same position doesn't mean you play the same style.

Do you need a scorer and probably the better passer?? take Bynum
Do you need a "true" center - defense, rebounding, blocks...more of a force in the middle?? take Oden

I'll take Oden 10 times out of 10 - he'll score his 10-15, but dominate in many more ways then Bynum can.

ya if your looking to run a more upstyle tempo and score alot of points bynums your guy but oden is the kind of guy who can just gut it out in the post and get stuff done

Here's why:

-They BOTH had bad injuries.
-Oden is much stronger.
-Oden has much more of KG/Dwight Howard, beastly rebounding mentality.
-As much as I loved seeing Bynum's improvement last year, we owe a lot of it to Kobe's sick passes

The reality is, Bynum is a great center that you put on a team to fit the missing link. He's the Center you put on the Lakers when they already have Gasol and Kobe, and he makes them that much better. Oden, on the other hand, is the guy you build your team around, the guy you bring in when you suck and need a building block.

If I needed a player this year, I'd take Andrew Bynum. If I needed a player to build a franchise around, I'd take Greg Oden.

thts a great a great point one of the only reasons i pick bynum is because he has a expericed team around him kobe is just amazing when he needs to be. odens team is yound but there gonna be amazing in the future
Exactly. This season was the ideal situation for him, with an unselfish Kobe helping him. Bynum is in a fantastic situation, playing on a great team where he gets to be the 3rd option, and be on the receiving end of Kobe's passes. Oden, on the other hand, will be expected to be the face of his franchise (along with Roy), before he even plays a game. I think both will thrive in their given roles, and that they are the perfect situations for these 2 young future stars...

I don't think that's necessarily the case. I totally agree with you about Bynum, but it's not like the Blazers offense is going to run through Oden. Remeber, the Blazers were a 40-42 win team last year, similar to the Lakers coming into last year. They both have a lot of budding young talent and an All-Star in the backcourt, although Roy is no Kobe. The difference I think is that while Bynum had compet with Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm for PT and boards, the Blazers have Lamarcus Aldridge and Channing Frye. Aldridge is becoming a very good player (while making John Paxon look again like an idiot) and Channing Frye has much more talent than either Kwame or Mihm. Oden will be a third option on the offensive end.

Can't wait to see Lakers v. Blazers. Kobe v. Roy. Gasol v. Aldridge. Oden v. Bynum. Great matchups!

frye is garbage and this converstation is pointless. bynum is a back to the basket post up player. ok so kobe gets him some easy ones. that doesnt explain his boards or blocks, and it overlooks the fact that bynum is a polished offensive player, unlike oden. bynum is a superior player when you throw it down into the block and let him work. also, this 2nd or 3rd man crap is stupid. bynum is 21 and by the time he's 25 he is going to be a huge offensive presence and one of the two focal points of the offense/team along with kobe. we are talking about who is going to be the better player. both are going to be playing on good teams anyway. again, im not here to say that bynum is definitely going to be better, that is just my opinion. but i cant figure out what the heck your point is brady2k.

this is why i keep writing meow. it's as insightful as this conversation has been so far

the two posts above my rant actually say something constructive. the guy who likes oden understands they are different players, and the OP understands bynum is a classic post up center. what else is there to say?

I think the injury to Oden was the best thing that could of happened for Aldridge. It gave him a year to show how good he can be. He still has a ways to go, but he reminds me of Sheed except he has shown a willingness to play with his back to the basket. He has no where near the range of Wallace, but his length makes him very difficult to guard. I would love to continue to see him improve and be the second option behind Roy.

Let Oden concentrate on rebounding and defense. That's where he can make an immediate impact. His offensive game will come with experience. Blazers need an inside presence on defense. I'd love to see 12 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks a game from Oden next year. The thing that won't show up in the box score is the changed shots, as well as, Portland's perimeter defenders being able to play tougher defense out top, knowing Oden is behind them to help out. I think the 12/10/2 is a fairly low prediction after the team gels and he has confidence in his knee. It may be rocky to begin with I think he may start out averaging 12/8/1 with 6 fouls. I'm sure the year off has made him even more anxious and you may see very limited minutes in some games due to foul trouble from pressing too hard.

thts a great point the blazers are gonna have two GREAT big men in the futrue while the lakers will have bynum and gasol but the blazers front will just start dominating and be comfortble together by the time gasol is getting ready ti retire

I personally think both players will be good, but not great. I don't think either will be the HOF everyone has them out to be.
