They say "May" because it's possible he could return the favor of them releasing him and stay on the team.

If he's DFA and passes through the waiver wire, he can refuse assignment because he has more than 5 years of service and stay on the roster. Granted he may never play in another game for Seattle, he could in fact waste a roster spot sitting on the bench getting paid and they can't do anything about it.

Richie has in no way lived up to the hype set in place with that huge contract but really, who else has on the team? Richie just has the biggest target on his back.. for now.

I can only hope some team rolls the dice and works a deal so he can play with a better managed team and return to his true form.

If he's DFA'd he would have to go through waivers and if not claimed, he could refuse assignment and the mariners would either release him or cancel the waiver and keep him, they wouldnt be forced to keep him.

why didn't they let him go when he was claimed on waivers last year, then they wouldn't have had to eat the millions

I think you're thinking of the post-trading deadline waiver wire. Prior to the deadline, Richie can be outright released if he isn't claimed and refuses assignment. Granted the M's will still be responsible for his salary...and chances are if they trade him, they'll be paying quite a bit of it too. But frankly, to get him off the roster, it'd be worth it to shell out the cash.
