I believe they mean modern baseball. He was the first to break the color barrier. There was no color barrier when Walker started playing. The travesty of the Robinson story is Larry Doby who joined Robinson in the majors just 3 months later and was the first African American player to play in the American League but isn't even a cliff note in the story of MLB's history.

Ahh, but he IS in the Hall.
