RE: Team Collector Looking to Sell Collection . . . Needs Advice
Thank You, anyway. But I'm only interested in Beckett Graded Nolans.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

The idea is very much to sell to a collector and not a dealer, and I know there aren't a lot of people with interest but my figuring is that there's got to be some. You need someone with cash and an interest but who hasn't necessarily dedicated themselves already. That's why I posted on Neshek's board . . . and why if I could find Brad Lidge. The thought had also occurred that the Astros themselves might be interested, again because of the historical value. I actually sent Mike Acosta an email but no word from that direction either.
Anyway, all replies are appreciated, thanks! and I will continue to monitor.
You might still want to consider contacting card shops and dealers in the Houston area. They might be able to put you in contact with an Astros collector that could be interested.

I've got the same problem, my team collection is a little bigger but its Yankees which are more prevalent in most sets. Problem is that anyone who has the interest to have that many already has most of them. Best bet would be to find another collector like you who you can help with the more hard-to-find (but not necessarily expensive) stuff and hope they have money, and sell the more saleable stuff on Ebay.

You probably have the #1 Astros collection in the world- here's an angle, contact some sports writers or lifestyle writers for the East Texas newspapers. If they do a feature, and you happen to mention that you're selling, maybe someone will take a shot at it.

Thanks for the advice, yankee98. All these years I acquired and acquired, and it really never occurred to me that the collection, because, again, it probably became the best in the world, would be difficult to sell. But there it is.

I believe others have chimed in on this as well, if book value is anywhere in your vocabulary, you will definitely be disappointed. It is not unusual to get 2-5% of book value for bulk stuff, though it can even be less ... or more, depending upon what you have.

When selling off a collection like this, there are 2 ways to go about it:
- Sell in a lump for less, which = less time invested
- Sell off piece by piece for more money, which = more time invested

Typically, the more time you spend, the more money you will get out of the deal, however, that isn't to say you will get more $ per hour on average. Cards are a tricky thing, because people typically won't be willing to pay for all the hours you have invested in hunting down and cataloging cards.

Now, with all that said, here is what I would do: Take a BOAT load of *good* pictures, market it as one of the largest Astros collections around and put it on ebay! Set a high BIN and take offers. I would do that before doing anything else. It will give you national exposure, while giving you a platform to educate your potential buyer as to what you have. I am not sure i would advise driving a thousand miles to Houston for the show to sell these as a first resort; I would do that as a second resort after Ebay. At the show, be prepared to get a whole lotta $500 offers.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply. Obviously ebay is the first thing I thought of, but my selling limit was much less than what I would have put the BIN at. that's why I thought of Probstein consignment because his selling limit would have been well in excess of anything I might have asked. But he wasn't interested.
