BVG Serial numbers do not match Beckett Website?

BVG Serial numbers do not match Beckett Website?
I recently sold this card on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...TQ:US:1123 It was graded long ago by Beckett. It is in the original BVG slab, has the sub grades on the back, and the serial number on the back. When the buyer received the card, they checked the serial number on the Beckett website. It came up with a Randy Moss card from 1998. They instantly made a paypal claim and my money was snatched away. I was of course extremely worried. But I looked all over ebay and found many BVG cards with the older cases that have the grade on the front, the subgrade on the back, a barcode on the back, and a serial number on the back. The serial number of every single one shows up as a different card on the Beckett website (even of the BVG button is pushed instead of BGS). Some other instances are ebay items 121241434443, 131071023597, among many many others. I cannot find any message boards that discuss this issue. Is there somewhere else to look up the old serial numbers? Certainly all of those $20 cards arent fake cards, with fake BVG cases and fake serial numbers. Has anyone run in to this? Can anyone help me out with some information so I could get my $1700 back? Help would be much appreciated!!

I have a 1961 Topps Dave Wickersham that does this. Contact Jeff the supermoderator and let him know. Beckett's database, the way I understand it, is really fouled up on the older graded cards. They are trying to fix it, but Jeff told me my card probably wouldn't show up until sometime in January. BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS CONTACT JEFF. HE HAS MANY PLACES TO DO THAT THROUGHOUT THE FORUMS. It's too bad the customer was so quick to pull out. I sympathize with you.
If you go to forums/Graded Cards Registry, the very top thread is a way you can let Jeff know.

BRIANSTOX, may I ask what card you sold and what the card was graded? The card isn't fake the serial numbers are screwed up in the system is all. If the card is something I can use I may be interested because I personally prefer the old BVG labels for my own collection.

Thanks for the help! I got it all cleared up now. Apparently when Beckett did a previous software conversion, all of the "Old Label" BVG serial numbers were lost. So I probably wouldnt worry 48ashburn, but you can always send it to Beckett again if you are worried.

You didn't get a bogus card. I encountered the same on a number of cards. The cause and explanation from Beckett is similar to one of the posts in this thread. I was advised by Beckett to resubmit for re-slabbling at no cost which I have not done yet. I would suggest confirming this path with Beckett first if considering.

Nothing much you can do. A year or two ago, Beckett's database crashed and all of the old vintage #'s were lost. I talked to the Director of Grading about entering my vintage cards into the Beckett Registry and he said that they may never be able to be recovered. I have too many to be reslabbed with new #'s and I like the old labels that still have the subgrades on them.

RE: BVG Serial numbers do not match Beckett Website?
I noticed that sports cards have been doing well as of late, so I took a look through some of my older cards. I dug out my BVG graded 7.5 NM+ Lew Alcindor 1970-71 Topps tall boy to see what it might go for. To my surprise, that same BVG graded card was selling quite well. So I decided to sell it. I listed it on ebay and wondered if there was a way to look up the serial number on Beckett's site. When I did, it was not found, so I started searching the internet to see if anyone else had this issue, which brought me to this thread. I immediately ended the ebay listing to avoid the same problem the original poster of this thread had. To be honest, I don't even remember when I sent the card in for grading, but the grading portion at the top of the slab is different than what was mentioned here. The grading tag is copper colored, and it has 4 sub-grades and serial number on the front. The back just shows "Beckett.com".

I called Beckett Grading Services and spoke with someone who told me the exact same thing as is stated in this thread. They instructed me to contact the customer rep for my area, so I emailed him and he has been very helpful. After explaining the situation, he emailed me a pre-paid Fedex label to send the card in for new casing and serial number at no charge. He also sent a submission form and told me to write "Re-case BCCG only -- Needs new serial number -- No charge" on the form. I added his name on the form and am going to send it in today. I was told the entire process should take about 3-4 weeks. I hope that is true because the value of my card is high right now, but that could change.

I've attached a few photos:
