I have done this type of transaction (direct PayPal) about 40 times and never had a problem.
Just make sure you add a detailed description. E.g., Card(s) year/number/player(s) name.
Is this person a member of any sports cards trading sites?

PayPal is great about getting you your money if anything goes wrong with a transaction. They have great customer service. They have helped me out numerous times and I have been 100% satisfied with every encounter I have had with them.
