RE: Must haves that don't break the bank
I'd throw in the following (starting at the random year of '75):
-75 Yount and Brett
-78 Murray
-79 Smith
-80 Henderson
-82 Traded Ripken
-83 Topps Gwynn, Boggs, and Sandberg
-84 Donruss Mattingly
-85 Topps Clemens and McGwire
-86 Traded Bonds
-89 UD Griffey
-92 Fleer Update Piazza
-93 SP Jeter
-94 SP ARod

After that I'm not sure. Lot's of great cards out there but for me personally, these are ones I would consider must have's for my modern PC from '75 and up that won't break the bank.

Good list, I'd also add the 85 Topps Puckett, 88 Score Traded Biggio and Alomar, 90 Leaf Frank Thomas, 91 Topps Chipper Jones, and I'd say 91 UD Pedro Martinez and the 92 Bowman Piazza.

Good call. How I missed those I have no idea. I did bounce back and forth between the Bowman and Fleer Update Piazza. I guess I settled on the Update because I have one. :-)

How about the '86 Sportflics Rookies Barry Larkin for a few dollars. He's in the Hall of Fame and its his only MLB licensed card from '86..
Collecting 2010 Bowman, 80s oddball rookies, and '89 Griffeys.

Two future HoF bound rookies on one card. A relatively inexpensive one at that.
This is the reason I got stop reading the boards! Now I want to go out buy this card!
