1989 UD Griffey Jr. BGS 9.5 Trimmed??
Hi All,

I just received an '89 UD Griffey BGS 9.5 that I purchased off eBay. The seller appears to be pretty reputable. Here is the listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/130694441075?ssP...1497.l2649

I am suspicious that the card has been trimmed on one side since it does not seem to match up with the cards from my full set of 89 upper deck baseball. The card appears to be narrow in width and the white borders on each side appear to look thin too. The seller claims that 1989 Upper Deck set was slightly off in size in comparison to the cards that came out of the packs. Also that the variance could be due to the card sitting in the corner of the page when it was cut since it's #1.

Would really appreciate some feedback as I would like to not have to return the card!

Thanks,
Phil-
I know that the case itself may distort the size (perhaps), however I held up the same cards to other cards I have in slabs and they seemed to line up perfectly, so I am fairly certain that the Griffey card is narrower.

I agree. I overlayed it with another one, aligned the inner black box perfectly and yours definitely is thinner.

The general consensus on the other forum seems to be that the '89 upper decks were really inconsistent in terms of dimensions, so it is very unlikely that the card was tamped with.

That maybe the case, but this wasn't a subtle difference.

What's to say that all the cards that you're comparing the BGS 9.5 Griffey too, wouldn't grade BGS 7 or lower. What I'm saying is, what if you're comparing the 9.5 to a card that would actually grade a BGS 7?

The overall grade in this situation isn't really a factor since he's just looking at the size of the card itself. With that said, your point is still the same since the ones he is comparing could just be cut larger.

In the end, if it is actually smaller, I think it's just the factory cut it shorter (still happens to this day) but the card still fell within the allotted specs to meet the grade.

Nolan5000, I actually took a big stack of cards that were all perfectly aligned, all different types (hockey, baseball, basketball, football, etc.) and did the comparison so the Griffey I have is absolutely short. I think like Ricelynnevans75 just said, it's short but within BGS standards. To me it's just an eye sore more than anything else.

RE: 1989 UD Griffey Jr. BGS 9.5 Trimmed??
A couple years ago I bought a lot of beautiful 89 Ud griffey cards at the national. Sent them to PSA to get graded and they all came back "not meeting size requirements". Then I sent them to BGS and all got graded. I thin I got back 2 bgs 9's, 4 bgs 8.5s and a 3 bgs 8s.

But I remember reading somewhere that this card was cut in different sizes for factory sets and packs like ricelynnenvans stated.

Collecting Bob Feller, 1951 Bowman, anything Cleveland.
