Anything can happen for dramatic effect on the TV show. In the books, Dale is around a long time. Sophia (the zombie little girl) is also still around and quite alive. Both her and Dale's deaths added something to the story that was missing from the books.
Great show. Finally getting to the true essence of the show..... The zombies are always a danger. The true evil comes from the humans left alive after the apocalypse. The cruel things they do to each other when society's rules no longer apply. As Rick stated in the books. The survivors are "the Walking Dead" 
Great first sode...wish it was a 2 sode premier though

maybe those inmates aquired a taste for walkers, otherwise the supplies are probably depleted. never seen anyone so happy to be in prison...
