By "corrupted file icon" do you mean a small red X inside of a blank window where your avatar should be? I am having the same problem

I cant get my avatar to update either. Very annoying. I can wait 24 hours or a lifetime it will not change. Red X and there is no way to select any part of the image for an avatar. Must be that it is broken on here.
