Graded card - "cannot be authenticated"

Graded card - "cannot be authenticated"

So I sent off a Delong Gehrig card that I bought to confirm if it was authentic or not. Comes back from BVG as "cannot tell if its authentic."

There has GOT to be a service that will say, one way or the other, if its real. Seriously! How hard can it be to authenticate? Is the paper old enough? Is the ink correct?

This isn't a 1985 Topps card. This is a VERY old card. Which, in my mind, would make it easier.

Any thoughts on who can help with this? Clearly not Beckett!

PS - the seller refunded my money - so only out the cost to NOT have it graded. So not totally bad!

thanks

Well The logical choice is to go with psa. I'd say go with sgc though.

Do you, or does anybody have experience with, a grading company "stepping up" and if they won't authenticate will at least not charge me? This could get expensive looking for a "real" expert.

thanks Dayton for the suggestion......might have to try it.

I am pretty sure if they take the time to check out the card they will all charge you a fee? Maybe you could get it checked by PSA at a local show?

SGC still charged me a fee when I had sent them a trimmed card. Nothing against them though, they performed the service and I asked that it not be slabbed if the card was not authentic or was altered.
Interested in EX-MT or better pre-'56 Cardinals, '53 Bowman Color & '74-'78 Topps.

I will say that I had that happen with PSA once but they did give me a coupon for a free card grading on my next submission.

I wish PSA did that for me. I sent in a few cards and they didn't grade 2 of them. It was when I joined their club. If they would have sent me such coupons i would have probably re-newed my membership. Their loss!

I don't know.......they are the experts. A yes or a no seems to be the only options. I don't know is NOT what I paid them for! JSA (the auto grader) states that if they cannot authenticate they will give you a credit.
I still think that they should be able to say its real or fake.....but the credit takes some of the pain away.

I rushed it to them and back (like $50 in shipping) and had it rush graded (extra $) because I had a seller willing to refund the purchase price and I didn't want it to take 2 months.

Thanks for the thoughts!!!!!

That's strange. I'd be curious to know why they can't go one way or the other and what's throwing them off exactly.

Me too Rice. Me too!

Get this (The Paul Harvey rest of the story). So I've owned a couple non-production cards that are signed. I think I bought them at some point - but might have traded for them. Pujols and Jeter. They look real nice. Always wondered.
Sent them to JSA finally. Got them back today. Guess what?

Can't be sure is basically what they told me. They list what makes them suspicious - but don't really say FAKE! I'd prefer that!

Also got a $20 coupon - but not sure if they charged me the $70 to give me this "not really an answer" answer.

I have NOOOO luck!
