The proceeds go to charity so more power to the winning bidder. I never care about the price something sells for if it is for a good cause.

Good to know, but really poor writing by the author of that article. Why not focus on the fact that the money was going to the city's homeless. Most charity auctions sell for more than regular auctions simply because the money goes to charity, which can be a tax write-off.
