RE: Grading: PSA vs. Beckett
Bottom line if you want the better service go BGS, if not you can always go with the lowly PSA.
(my opinion) BGS all the way, if you want some sympathy for PSA go to their forums......j/k..
Why....?
All joking aside I think BGS is a better more accurate service for the most part. PSA just has been doing it longer so they hold the lionshare as far % of vintage cards graded. If it's a keeper I would say BGS regardless of the year.
The only advantage I see for submitting to PSA is if your going to try to sell it within the next 5 years. Most of the set collectors who are in the market looking to buy graded vintage have accumulated PSA. So they are stuck with their poor grading decision and it is to costly for them to go back. Mixing and matching isn't a good option for building a graded set. That is the only reason I can see why they would pick PSA over BGS.

RE: Grading: PSA vs. Beckett
I prefer Beckett but when searching for vintage cards it is hard to find many for sale graded by Beckett because everyone goes with PSA with the hopes of a higher grade it seems.
If I had vintage stuff that was grade worthy I would submit to BVG before I would go to PSA.

Alot of people go PSA on vintage cause BGS will kill you on your grades. PSA is way more forgiving than BGS. BGS for anything else for sure! Good luck!

I've been thinking about buying a few vintage PSA Chiefs RC that are 8s and submitting them to bvg for regrading. Not sure if I will have to crack the slabs or not though

It would be BVG for vintage, and I believe BVG standards are different than BGS (someone correct me if I am mistaken) being that they are less stingy on grade criteria based on the era of prodution. PSA I BELIEVE, and STRESS believe they grade every card that comes in the door the same.
If you want your stuff to be in prettier cases, go BGS. If you want to resell within the next year or so, go PSA. PSA has a superior registry, and that is the only real reason grading companies exist IMO. So that a collector can say, "my cards are better than yours" and have proof.

Gonzo you ar right on the BGS vs BVG, that is actually what I meant but it didnt type that way, but, my LCS guy does alot of vintage and he has taken stuff that was PSA 8's and 9's and sent them to BVG and not one of them came back with the same grade and most ended up in the BVG 3.5 - 6 range. I have seen it numerous times first hand and I know for a fact PSA is more favorable with the grades on vintage.
