RE: Vintage Red Sox Pc (Updated 7/14/14) Scan Heavy!
July turned into a GREAT month for me for vintage. Earlier in the month I had finished 1949 Bowman, !953 Topps and 1955 Red man. Last week I was able to pick up and finish 2 more team sets, 1951 Topps Blue Backs and 1953 Bowman Black and White!

My complete Bowman Red Sox run is now complete with the exception of ONE card, just a small one 1954 Bowman Ted Williams (I will likely never be able to afford a decent one, or for that matter even a poor one).

My complete Topps Red Sox run is missing only 1952 Topps. with 9 high number Red Sox in that set, I may never finish that one either.

So without further ado, here are the new arrivals!

1951 Topps Blue Backs 5 Johnny Pesky

Nice Willis, congrats. I just got my first this year also. Let me know what you like for sox. I have a large collection of high end vintage and modern. Check out my photo bucket. I made a quick sideshow of both.

It's been a long time since I have updated this thread. Finally got to put to bed my 1948 - 1955 Bowman run with this last card I needed!

[Image: 1954_bowman_66_williams_sgc_zpsseanmsee.jpg]

PSA 10 and SGC 10 are about the same, right? Regardless, I never thought I would ever be able to pick one of these up in any condition!

Another Recent pick up and one you don't see every day....

1939 Goudey Premiums R303A 47 Ted Williams

[Image: 1939_goudey_premiums_r303a_williams_back...ugywkf.jpg]

While it is from his rookie season it is not considered a rookie card. It is however far more scarce than his rookie...
grading totals
1939 Play Ball - PSA=823 SGC=267 BVG=63 ....total graded = 1153
1939 Goudey R303A - PSA=9 SGC=9 BVG=1 ..total graded = 19!

Coincidentally, my father is visiting from out of town and was talking about how he saw that Ruth Card from the 1910s on Pawn Stars. Lead to a discussion of how it was not actually his accepted Rookie Card, but that 1933 Goudey is. Apologize to interrupt your thread with this question but it kinda brings it up...why? Why with this era are early cards during playing days not considered RC? Is it because they are not from major sets? But more local issues? I would think that Goudey at this time frame would be considered a major manufacturer (assuming that the 33 Goudey is considered a major set, then would 39 not be the same?)

Great looking cards BTW.

Great question...With the 1916 M101-4 Ruth (I assume that is the one in question), those were a regional release, not national. In addition I believe they may have been sold by mail order only (but I could be way off base with that). Ruth actually appeared on 150 or so cards before the release of the 1933 Goudey set.
In 1939 Goudey did not make a card set , so, I'm not sure how the "premiums" were distributed. Maybe with gum purchase or a non-sport set? They are very thin paper, so I can't imagine them being anything other that a mail in item.
