RE: The Not so "Sweet" side of the late Walter Payton...??
I know me as a collector and a fan of sports, players personal life is just that, personal. I don't care if they kill dogs, I don't care is they smoke or sell cra....drugs, I just don't care. Now I do care to the fact that people can mess up their life, but again, it is their life. I understand that famous people in general are looked up to by kids and things, but parents have to explain that they too are humans, they are adults, and adults can do what they want. Parents should be an example to their own children not anyone famous, sports or entertainment. So......what I have read about Sweetness or any other famous person do not sway my opinion of them. I don't condone the things any of them do or have done, I totally understand that what ever an adult do, they themselves have to live with it and have to suffer the consequences.

I agree with you on that one, parents let the media and celebrities raise their children to much. Be a positive influence to your kids and they will see what is right and wrong without having to mimic someone besides you. As far as Payton.....yeah I'm a bears fan but this goes for any NFL guy in my opinion. What they do when they're not playing is on them, if they wan to end a career or life early, they're big enough to know what they're doing so you really can't try to monitor them, they're going to do what they do. I'm sure 75% of the league that has been in NFL over 4-5 years that is a star player is in pain and deals with it in some sort of way but once again that's just an opinion. I know I'd be sore after a 400lb man ran at me and hit me running full speed every week for a few months out of the year. Just think about it

RE: The Not so "Sweet" side of the late Walter Payton...??
Will it affect his card values, No, he's a legend, his card values will stay where they were.
If you read about Darvon on wikipedia, it's going to affect your liver if you keep abusing it. It also can cause suicidal thoughts, the book apparently talks about Payton having those problems. Did Payton abuse painkillers, I think he probably did. I'm old enough to have watch Payton play live on TV, I saw how he ran, he took on a lot of hits, broke a lot of tackles, dove other piles of players, landing on the old astroturf, in hot and cold weather in Chicago. Landing on astroturf is similar to falling down in the parking lot at Walmart, it hurts. He could not have played that long without drugs, prescribed by the Bears. In the 1970's & 1980's, there was less ESPN following of the NFL, no internet, less intense media coverage. Nobody was checking or reporting on drug abuse, it is different today. Whatever it took to get the players ready for Sunday, the teams did it, told the players they would be fine. Walter Payton sadly died of bile duct cancer, an incredibly rare cancer, do a wikipedia check and see the numbers. I wonder if his rare cancer, Lyle Alzado's rare cancer is the result of players being mislead 30 years ago to the dangers of overusing pain medication drugs or steriods. All players play hurt, they all suffer after playing, so taking pain medication is part of the culture, I'm surprised more players don't die the same way. |
