Search Feature in Organize - Issues and Enhancements
As a new user of the Beckett site, I have found several aspects of the Search functionality [within the Organize feature] to be very frustrating. I would expect the search function to work the same as it does in the Price Guide feature. [Possibly an 'Advanced Search' option in Organize with functionality similar to Search in Price Guide could be made available].
The limited usability of the search features comes into focus due to limitations with other features [adding quantity to Price Guide, or inability to display a lot of multiple columns - due to fixed width] for example]. Bugs with Search: [1] If I change a search term [to correct a typo for example] before the results of the previous search are shown [and re-click Find] I will never be able to see the results of the second search. Even retyping the same [corrected] search terms will not re-instantiate the search. I need to search on different terms and go back. [2] If I remove a tag from any item [clicking the 'x' on the tag] my search is completely reset. As there is no function to 'remove' tags from multiple items at the same time, this prevents the ability to remove the same tag from multiple items. [3] If I enter the SAME search terms, a new search will not be instantiated. This is a similar to issue [1] however becomes apparent in conjunction with issue [2]. Example : I do a search for "Joe Smith" and the results are all of the Joe Smith cards in my collection. I then remove a tag from one of the cards. The removal of the tag resets my results to display all items in my collection. [2]. I attempt to click on 'Find' again or completely retype the exact same search term and a new search is never instantiated. I have to search for something ELSE and then come back to that search. This would not be an issue [for me] if not for the results becoming reset when I delete tags. Limitations of Search [1] I cannot sort the results of the search by any of the columns. [2] Number of results to display per page is not retained over a period of time. At some point the fact that I want to see 500 items [instead of the default 100] is not retained. The result set is repeatedly set back to 100 at some point [which I am unaware of at the time] and it causes confusion or forces any selections I have to be reset when increasing it. Enhancement Requests for Search [1] I would like to be able to search a subset of cards based on those which I have [Have > 0] Do not have [Have = 0] or Want [Want > 0] or do not want [Want = 0] [2] I would like to be able to filter searches similar to the search in Price Guide. If searching for 'main' set cards, I have no way to prevent all of the parallel sets from appearing [the main set doesn't have a term in it which distinguishes it from the variations]. This is easy to do in Price Guide with the filters. [By clicking the 'main set' feature. All of the available filters in Price Guide should be available to use in Organize. [3] 'Search Preferences' per user [in a profile] would allow default preferences to be configured per user. For example: [default] Number of results per page [default] Column to Sort results by Other preferences such as preferred filters to display would be helpful as well. _____________________ One of the reasons the search is very frustrating and requires additional functionality is due to limitations with other areas of the software, For example, due to the fixed size of the main frame, only a limited number of columns can be displayed at any one time without cutting off the majority of the card description [which is unable to go to a second line]. This limits the ability to see various aspects of the result set from a search requiring a more advanced search. Even with minimal columns the text is cut-off in the description making additional search terms/filters necessary to eliminate information which cannot be viewed. The inability to sort the results requires more advanced searching in order to create a smaller result set. If it were possible to sort by column on the result set, it may not be necessary to narrow down the results by as much. Overall, if the search in Organize functioned exactly like the search in the Price Guide, the code should be re-used, saving time with maintenance and new search features. It seems there are two separate search functions [one for price, one for organize], the latter of which is severely lacking in functionality. ![]() My Goalie-Graph Stick: Goalie Count: 7 Goalies Still Needed: 54 Teams Needed: 26 *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* PM me info on upcoming signing events for your team's goalie [just the cute ones ....] |
