RE: 2011 Bowman Platinum 5 case break and contest thread (first contest closed)
Case #1, Box #7
Green prospect refractor /599: Kyle Russell Blue prospect refractor /199: Cody Scarpetta Autos: Jean Segura, Jameson Taillon Auto relic /1166: Adam Rosales Grade: F+ Comments: I think I’ve filled my quota of Adam Rosales now. Another problem with the unnumbered veteran & rookie refractors: the gold cards are awfully hard to tell apart from the base. Lots of flipping back and forth against the light. Case #1, Box #8 Green prospect refractor /599: Jake Marisnick Gold prospect refractor /50: Jake Skole Auto: Rashun Dixon Green auto /399: Kyle Parker Green auto relic /199: Robinson Tejeda Grade: D- Comments: I’m starting to get good at distinguishing between F, F+, D-, and D. Not a skill I was looking forward to developing. |

This is one of the reasons I like to bust and grade publicly. A lot of the information we get about products comes from people who bust and then only post when they hit something amazing. It's totally understandable, but it's not too helpful to get only good news about a product. Secondly, you really do need multiple cases of break to understand a product. Some are rotten all the way through (2008 Bowman Chrome football), some are consistently solid (I'd put 2010 Bowman Platinum in this category), and most are highly variable from box to box. A key question is whether the big hits balance out the bad boxes, which you can't really determine with a small sample. So far I'm hoping that the hits will balance things out a bit, but I admit not being optimistic. (07-29-2011 12:00 AM)wampier Wrote: Come on good luck... Sorry to say that the usa is only going for 25 avg on the bay... Agreed. I was using a back of the hand estimate of $28, but that may be optimistic. BTW, in case you didn't know, there's a lot of anger about the disconnect between the preliminary checklist and the actual product. http://atlantasportscards.com/blog/2011/...8N.twitter Case #1, Box #10 Green prospect refractors /599: Chun-Hsiu Chen, Drew Pomeranz Auto: Joe Benson Green auto /399: Adam Warren Auto relic redemption: Trevor Bell Dual auto: Gary Sanchez/Jesus Montero Grade: C Comments: Wow, these relics are killing me. Nice dual auto. Case #1, Box #11 Green prospect refractors /599: Marcel Ozuna, Manny Banuelos Autos: Dickie Joe Thon, Cutter Dykstra Auto relic: Jake McGee Grade: F+ Comments: Could be worse, but not much. De Los Santos appears to be the contest card. Go Brad Penny! |

Case #1, Box #12
Green prospect refractor /599: Jarrod Parker Blue prospect refractor /199: Matt Lipka Auto: Hayden Simpson Gold auto redemption: Matt Harvey Auto relic /1166: Evan Meek Grade: D Comments: Nice Harvey. I’m up to 8 redemptions now. Okay, De Los Santos is the official contest card, so tiebreak determines the winner. 32 contestants are still alive, with predictions for Brad Penny’s pitch count ranging from 50 to 106. Good luck! I’ll be back later today with the second contest. Case #1 Summary 744 Autos: Hayden Simpson Dickie Joe Thon Cutter Dykstra Brandon Guyer Delino DeShields Mike Foltynewicz Tyler Skaggs Jean Segura Jameson Taillon Rashun Dixon Miguel De Los Santos Kyle Parker Joe Benson Randall Delgado Shelby Miller Matt Harvey (2) Emerald autos /399: Kyle Parker Dickie Joe Thon Adam Warren Rashun Dixon Gold auto /50: Matt Harvey Ruby Auto /10: Miguel De Los Santos Auto relics /1166: Evan Meek Jake McGee Robinson Tejeda Ozzie Martinez Adam Rosales (2) Jesse Crain (2) Brett Cecil Trevor Bell Green auto relics /199: Evan Meek Robinson Tejeda USA autos (2) Dual auto relics /89: Gary Sanchez/Jesus Montero Starlin Castro/Marlon Byrd Grade: D Comments:There’s little question that this case did not give me anywhere close to the value I expected considering my outlay. The boxes were basically worth about $62 each, compared to the $92 I paid. None of the 12 boxes gave me good value, and only three of the 12 could be graded C. It’s possible that I’ll get some hits in future cases that will mitigate the loss, but it’s likelier that the pain will continue. |
