BGS changes grading policies all the time and I think most of the CS is either confused or not up to date. Last year I put in my Front Row Auto, and my Little Sun Auto and they came back with a sticker on the back of the holder. Since then I have had them certified by JSA to be Authentic an beckett tell me I will have to check with JSA and see if they will take the certs send back to them and have them send it to beckett for grading. I can't send those cards directly to beckett. RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
I emailed the grader at BGS I have an email address for, and asked him about BGS policies on star cards.
MODs-I thought I posted this yesterday, either I forgot hit the post button or my post got erased by a mod. If I can't post the email response from a grader let me know. Here is the response................. Yes, we grade Star cards. There are a few that are highly counterfeited that we don’t grade but we grade 95% of them. Let me know if you come up with any other questions. Thanks, Joe Nevermind MODs, I posted that in the wrong thread yesterday. DUH??? MY PHOTOBUCKET LOOKING FOR.... RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
Great thread! Matter of fact, since this came out... I just happened to be looking for lots on the bay and found one that includes a Jordan Star RC! The auction is super cheap and, also from Steve Taft, I just read an interview online that debunked the reprint myth.
So considering the BV on this and what individuals of this card sell for on the bay... is there any risk in throwing down for the lot that includes this card??? The other thing that's odd... is there are also people who openly sell reprints. (On another site there is a pic where there is a pile of THOUSANDS of them and they offer to sell in singles or in bulk). What's the real story behind this myth? It's beginning to get intriguing. ![]() Collect Rose, Noah, Durant, Love, Blake, Ray, SQuest BlackPHOTOBUCKET |

RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
There in no myth, the Star plates were sold and used to make more copies than the original production run. This flooded the market with cards very close to the originals and with hardly any differences. You can check the paper stock and if the card has a high gloss surface, it is not original either. That is the only way that I can tell.
BGS grades most of these except the highly counterfieted ones, I would assume that the MJ is the most counterfieted one. Mr. Taft is great to work with, but I am not so sure you can get that MJ slabbed by BGS. MY PHOTOBUCKET LOOKING FOR.... NO MORE 1993-94 Finest Refractors / THE SET IS COMPLETED!!! |

RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
Straight from Steve Taft himself.
Re: Star Jordan XRC Grading From: "Stevetaft@aol.com" Add to Contacts To: skamelamela@yahoo.com the card appears to be real, HOWEVER, I can never guarantee that when looking at a scan. If you want me to handle everything, I take a 10% commission PLUS internet host fee's and credit card company fee's. In this case, I'd also need to have BGS grade the card. The grading fee is minimal, but, the shipping to/from the grading company is a bit expensive as it's necessary to insure each way. This equates to approximately $50 to $100 in internet host fee's, 3% credit card / paypal fee's, and, $65 in grading / shipping fee's. I can't see the corners of your card very well, but, it looks like there is some minor wear. Centering is average for this card, which, also keeps the card from a real high grade. My guess is you have a $1200 to $1950 retail card value. Note I said my guess, no guarantee's when looking a scan.... If the above interests you, let me know and we can get started.... If not, you should go ahead and send it to BGS yourself for grading / authentication. I trained their staff on authentication, but, I don't work for them. Info at beckett.com on how to submit a card(s)..... Regards, ST http://stevetaft.beckett.com

RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
Also these cards were distributed in team set and complete set forms and were not issued in regualar packs. The counterfieting and the distibution method is the reason most collectors considered the 86-87 MJ to be the Rookie card.
I am glad I gave that reference, Mr. Taft knows these cards better than anyone else out there. I would spend the cash. The online sale difference would be welll well worth it. You could still get a good sale probably if someone knew what to look for and had the card in hand. It just makes it easier to move with a BGS slab. GOOD LUCK. RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
Since my name has been brought up in this thread a few times, I need to correct a few things that have been written.
First, I do NOT work for GAI or BGS. I wrote a Star Authenticity Guide for their grading staff and spent a day or two training them on Star Co. cards. I have never worked as a grader for any of these companies. This is important to me because I am a card dealer, and, it would be a conflict of interest to be grading my own cards. Thus my need to clarify the comment that I was a grader, as, that is not correct. I just taught them how to identify original Star Co. from the various counterfeits, and, I provided them with the Guide and some samples. IF they need me to help with an authenticity issue, they can call me..... Collector's take note, Star Co. is NOT as difficult to figure out as the rumors imply. BGS has not needed me to help with authenticity for over two years. In regard to the comment that the fronts and backs of all the printing plates were sold and re-used to print massive amounts of extra cards. THAT IS NOT TRUE. I am well versed on this subject and not willing to write thousands of words on this subject within this thread, so, I will say it one more time, IT IS NOT TRUE..... There is a 2nd run of part of the 85-6 set, ie. the 2nd series, but, it was never part of the dealer shipments. These cards have different cuts, slight variations in color brightness, and, contain off-register placement of film negatives, plus a couple other things. SCD, GAI, and BGS had virtually no problems identifying these once shown an example of each. Most of the counterfeits they receive now were printed from 2003 to 2007 and are what I would call rebuilt cards, ie. they did NOT have original plates or negatives to work with.... The same people that did these were also responsible for the minor league baseball counterfeits, as well as the Nike Jordan Postcard, Kenner SLU cards, Sportscasters, and a couple other counterfeits from the last ten years. One of the main distributors of these counterfeits was recently convicted of fraud, so, we can hope this shut down the rest of his co-conspirators. For those of you that still believe the Star MJ-101 was double printed after the fact and you can't tell the difference, why is it that the Population Report of Sports Collector's Digest, GAI, and BGS was / is so low? Where are all those perfect reprint 101's that flooded the market? One of these days people are going to figure things out, and there will be a rush to get the key RC's and superstars from Star Co. Basketball. It might still be a while before it happens, but, eventually, the truth will be known and the low production numbers of Star will make them the key collectibles they should be already. One last little tidbit of info..... the Jordan Star RC counterfeits are much easier to spot than the Jordan Fleer RC counterfeits. Bet that comes as a surprise to many..... Regards, ST |
