RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
BGS has the guy that used to grade for global before the company sold. His name is Steve Taft and he has stores on Beckett and other sites as well. All of his star cards are legit, being that he is the top expert on Star products.

The issue is not the later releases that Star had, it is the fact that all of the original plates (front and back) were sold off and were later used to print more copies later. The reason most grading services stay away from star is because it is next to impossible to tell the originals from the copies made with the plates after the original release.

BGS has Mr. Taft and as far as I know his word on authenticity is the final word. I think he uses differences in the paper stock to tell. I have seen the later unauthorized releases and there are some major differeces in the paper stock. Good luck with that MJ. I chased these cards for a while and eventually called it quits because it was so hard to find raw copies that I thought were good.

My BGS slabbed copies were definately the ones that sold the best.

I have a couple star cards of Jordan so SGC is where I will have to send them.

Derek Jeter Collector from 1992-1996. 298 out of 303 98% complete.

1019/1916 1990's Jeter cards 53%

RE: Michael Jordan "True" RC Question. Please help!
Even though they used the same printing plates from the original release, to me, there is a way to tell. The ones that were printed at a later date have a lot better centering. The original ones had horrible centering (like the MJ posted in this thread). The ones I have graded also have horrible centering. The ones graded gem mint by BGS have good centering and I suspect that those were the ones printed later on. So to me beckett and every other grading company can not tell the difference between the original and the later printed ones.

I'm no expert on star cards. But from my experience, centering and the color of the card can tell the difference (to me at least).

I have a very rare michael jordan card signed by john salley!!!

100% agreed there, I had an Hakeem that was a BGS 9 and I suspicion it was a bad slab. But hey they deem it good, it still sold like it was legit at a show.

I think your only good option is BGS. Global is no longer reliable and SGC won't slab them.

BGS and SGC grade them I have asked, neither dose PSA so I don't believe any well know company grades them. Kind of sucks since I had his 1984-85 RC, and a 1986 Star #1 of his. I really wouldn't like to use any other company but I guess if I had to I would. Who is ranked 4th and 5th as far as grading companies?

I don't believe they grade them anymore. I have asked and they have told me no. Ever since I sent in my 2 Derek Jeter Auto's and they never graded them because I needed to send the to JSA first I ask before I send anything.

I did not know they didn't grade them anymore. I got my star cards graded last year or two years ago by BGS, I don't remember exactly.

Like I said, there really isn't anyway to tell for sure that what you have is original or reprint. Even the grading companies can't tell the difference.

It has been more than a year since I tried BGS with star cards so I am not sure, but you can't trust some of the information that comes from the customer service. BGS changes grading policies all the time and I think most of the CS is either confused or not up to date.

I am in e-mail contact with the guy who is slabbing my BGS submission now. If your info is very old I can ask to be sure. How long ago did you try and submit the Jeter?
