You know, I was collecting back then, and I don't remember hearing anything about this card. Is there a story behind it? He just wasn't supposed to be #702 in that set?

I wouldn't say Holy Grail. Much more cards out there that is not that publicized.

Mike Witt isn't an error. it was replaced with the Expos "Rookie Threats".

Error/Variation, its all pretty well the same...if you go by your standard the frank thomas nnof isnt an error-it was replaced with a regular version before hand and after...? so it isnt an error either? consider how many people collected back then unlike in todays market place and sooooo many still never heard of it...! the witt is easily in my mind one of the hardest if not the hardest to find variations of the last 40 years (possibly the reggie 1977 orioles, 1980 topps marting mgr. yankees, etc..)! much harder to find than the 1990 pro set manley and they regularly sell for $550-800 (with corrected "t" or "j" version...) the most famous card in baseball history can bring i higher $$$ just do to the fact of the tobacco company on the back...it is still the same card in the set, just a variation of maker...errors and variations are nothing new to the market...many forget error/variations have been collected forever, game used and auto cards have only been collected for 15 years or so...i think more people should try the variation craze, its addicting!

if there is an error/variation of a player I collect, then I will try to get it. otherwise they have no appeal to me whatsoever. i just don't get collecting something for the mere fact it is rare. i prefer to collect things I like first, and are rare second.

Currently Collecting Vintage Mickey Mantle Cards 1951-1969

I found a cool little blog website about the cards..It seems there has never been a Witt card to show up without the black box...

RE: 1990 Upper Deck Mike Witt Black Box - How rare is it?
I have a 1990 Upper Deck Mike Witt 702A that is getting graded by PSA. Opps! Can I say that on this web site? It should grade a PSA 9 or 10. My son and I pulled it in February. It was in his common wall. I mean wall because there were 400,000 cards to go through. He sold one on eBay in January for $843. It was not grade but was close to a PSA 8. After seeing that the last one just went for $1300 and it was rough, I am getting excited about this one! I have two other errors for sale that came out of the Witt cases. There is a #743 Mark Gardner and a #777 Keith Hernandez. Now I will have to start my search over again for the #713 Ruskin error! I also have the high number checklist error (Copy right is double printed) but is does not appear to be as rare. The Gardner and the Hernandez is extremely rare but are only selling for around $10.00 on average. I only have less than 20 from 48 error cases! The 20 or so that I do have came straight from the case that the Witt error came from. Check out the Witt card on eBay in about a week. The auction will be for 10 days and I will not end it early. Does anyone know how many are registered with PSA? Thank you, Les
