RE: FRIENDLY DEBATE: BV/SV - What should be the determining factors?
I think the basic answer is simple economics. Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay. The HI column is generally a guide. You can't be dogmatic and say that that is what its worth. you might not even pay for a shawn kemp RC, but ill shell out 10 or 20 because thats my dude. There is demand for Blake because of mainly all the hype. And I don't mean that Blake aint the real thing but I'm saying that for one reason or another he's the one getting all the attention. Blake is a fan favorite on a broader scale and more people want a piece of blake than K Love. Iverson cards still carry some value because of what people are willing to pay. Thats all. A players card price is in no way a reflection of that players performance. Blake is just more attention grabbing. People that gave on basketball are coming back to the hobby and the sport because of situations like Blake or Kobe.
Book Value is entirely subjective conditional and relative. It can only be based on what the buyer is willing to pay in order to receive it. I'm just saying |

RE: FRIENDLY DEBATE: BV/SV - What should be the determining factors?
Alot of it comes down to people don't know how to read the price guide. The high price is the highest you can expect to get for the card. Meaning, the absolute highest, if you took your time and found the right buyer you can get that for it. People seem to conveniently forget their are two values, high and low. Me personally, I sell cards near or over book value constantly. Why? Because I take my time, and don't look to sell something just to make a quick buck. I like the cards I have and if you want them you're going to have to want them more than me. I think just this past week or so I sold 4 things......I don;'t think BV is too bad. And the one that went for $142.50 a guy told me the last one went for yada yada, it was half of what I got for mine.
$45 BV $40 $102.50 BV $80 $142.50 BV $100 $252.50 BV $250 On some sites including this one people look down on people who still use Book Value as a guide. I guess they don't know what they are missing out of. I do enjoy when people try and tell me why I should take their offer then hours later I sell to someone else for my asking price. If you're in it to make quick flips and list things regular auctions, book value isn't for you. If you enjoy your cards and just sell/trade them to support your collection (taking your time) to buy things you'd rather have, book value is for you. Neither way is perfect, both have major flaws. To each his own. As far as the discussion of the pricing of certain players. Stats mean nothing, its collectability. If you're a fan favorite and have a big following, ex: Blake Griffin (over Kevin Love) is more of a flashy player, people like him more, he has more of a demand for his cards, therefor they are obviously going to be worth more. Heck I remember Eric Crouchs being worth alot a few years ago because he had a following. Heck there used to be a common (should be) in 2002 Bowman Chrome (Baseball) it booked $150 and went for around that everytime it sold. Why? Because someone bought them all and set collector's needed them. Alot of different things go into it. Contrary to belief not everything is sold/bought on ebay. I ship trades out within 2 business days with DC. If you have less than 20 feedback you're sending first. Please don't ask me to check your org if you're not going to respond. Enjoying the boards again one ignore list addition at a time. |

Definitely gives me something to think about when I start selling some of my cards. Yeah, I want to get as many sold as quickly as I can so I can buy all the Pistons cards I don't have, but if I wait, I might be able to get more for them and get more Pistons. And yeah, I'm ashamed to say I've always stuck with HI BV and never really cared for LOW BV. I should start taking that into consideration. Thanks. MODERATORTOS-Read it

RE: FRIENDLY DEBATE: BV/SV - What should be the determining factors?
I have absolutely no interest in BV.
I don't subscribe to BV. I go purely by instinct and eBay sales data if available. My legendary players PC: http://will23c1982.smugmug.com/Sports/Ha...&k=7MppBJw
