this quote always irks me probably the worst idea/opinion/advice or whatever it is that floats around the boards regularly

Why is that?

It's the foundation of a free market economy, the backbone of eBay.

So if someone could only afford to offer me $20 for the Emmitt in my sig, I should take it? Because that card is "only worth what someone is willing to pay for it"?

Yes, unless someone with greater purchase power offered you $25.

Very good point.

I was under the assumption that everything is for sale, since it was on eBay. Though supply and demand can fluctuate these sale prices, competition (eBay's competitive bidding model), tend to lead to the decrease in price.

This both true and false.

Everything on ebay is available for purchase.
However, not everything is for sale to everyone - especially in "Best Offer" listing.

The lister can choose not to sell an available card listed at 100 OBO even if everyone only offers a single dollar.

I offer a Best Offer on all BINs, and don't really take offense to a low offer. Sometimes people are just fishing for the counter offer so I send the offer of the lowest I'll take.

I've had two examples recently. One I was selling a card with a BIN of $75 or best offer. I was thinking $75 had a chance (I don't jack my prices way up, I think they might get hit at where I set them) and someone offered me $25. I sent him a counter of $65 saying that was my best price and he hit it.

Sometimes people are idiots though, another card had a BIN of $125 ( the card is /15 and I've never seen it sell below $105) Someone offers me $50, and I counter with $110.
He rejects it, calls me a name, and sends links to auctions from other players in the set that have sold at $20. Keep in mind these 3 cards combined are barely over half the value of my card.
Things like that really irk me... not just the low-offer, but the insulting on top of it.

That is pretty simple.

If you want the card, then you have to meet the price. The card still may be only worth $100 to you as the consumer, but if you have a largest enough desire for it, you have to meet the providers demands.

That's the beauty of eBay. Any registered user can search to see what similar items to what they are selling have sold for in the last 90 days. If they want to match the current "going" rate, they can post their auction at that BIN price. If they feel they have a good that has reached a higher demand due to an increase in auctions, they may choose to pad their BIN price. But, stats don't lie, people are usually only willing to pay what the going rate is, so the seller may have to compromise to meet.

I am sure everyone has numerous theories and guesses as to how they should work their eBay auctions. I find that most of the time, simple economics will prevail.

It's obvious I'm wasting my time responding to you. Best of luck with your theory. I hope, really hope that one day I can find that special someone willing to pay a whopping $25 for this $2,200 card. Wink
