What We Think: What? A Press Pass basketball product in January? You bet.
Press Pass Legends combines 2006 rookies with some of the greatest college hoops legends of all time. Larry Bird, David Robinson, Bill Russell and Bill Walton are all decked out in their college duds. The base set includes around 50 college legends. Most have black-and-white photos, some of which are pretty grainy.
The parallel cards (average of one per pack) don’t offer much in the way of value. They seem geared more toward the retail customer. The best part about the product is the deep autograph checklist. Topps and Upper Deck autograph-exclusive rookies like Redick, Morrison, Aldridge and Thomas have signatures in this product. There are some combo Alumni Association signatures that pair players from the same school. There are some red ink and inscriptions autographs that will be announced on Beckett.com throughout February.
The Naismith Award Winners Autographs has a cool design with plenty of room for the signature. If you are the lucky collector who pulled one of the Pistol Pete cut signature cards, you have one of the first ever Maravich autographed basketball cards. The 11-card jersey set is nothing special, other than the fact that it includes college jersey swatches. The name, Saturday Swatches, carried over from the football Legends release, doesn’t really make since for basketball, since games are played throughout the week.
