I think for a couple of reasons
Money invested into vinatge wont really be lost Unless you screw up or become down and out it shouldnt lose its value overall
the modern stuff is nice great patches(if real) and decent AU's otherwise the rest is a waste of paper. you have to sell the commons by the pound to move them.

plus I love going through stacks of older cards and remembering the names fun stuff
and that is for all the sports Hockey and Basketball
remember the Topps Tall cards ?
rather have a stack of those then most of the SPA stuff
